'Could not create tray window'

Using Wine, I attempt to run program called Spelunky.
+william-bohrers-computer:~/desktop/spelunky 11 williambohrer$ wine Spelunky.exe+

It gives me:
+Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.+
+Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.+
+err:systray:initialize_systray Could not create tray window+

It then starts a debugger, mentions 32-bit code, and does a register dump.
I run another .exe file with identical results.

I have no idea what is going on, what is an X server and how do I set the $DISPLAY correctly?
