Itunes locks up if iphone connected

I have a fully updated iphone and Itunes but if i connect my iphone to my computer itunes locks up and nothing happens but my phone charges up. i cant do anything and the solution i have been told is to reset the iphone settings but i haent backed up my music. i have this
