I have an iPod Touch 8GB that was purchased at an Apple store a couple days before Christmas 2009 and I am unsure if it is a 2G or 3G. I know the 3G product line began in September 2009 and that the 2G line was retired then also. The question still remains; is it a 3G or a remaining 2G? The product number on the iPod's rear is A1288 and the model number is MC086LL according to the the General page in the Settings application. This information is also verified on the box. In the box, the headphones appear to be normal stereo headphones with no remote. When I used GeoHot's Blackra1n RC3 to jailbreak it, it is a tethered jailbreak. I have restored the firmware once so far, and after downloading the "iPod3,1
3.1.2_7D11Restore.ipsw" from
http://Felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware, iTunes refuses to use the provided firmware. When I Shift-Click the restore button with my iPod Touch in restore mode and select the firmware file, iTunes says "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." However, when I simply click the Restore button, iTunes offers to download the file itself. I do this, and sure enough, iTunes downloads "iPod2,1
3.1.2_7D11Restore.ipsw" and successfully installs it to the iPod Touch. Also, the space is 7.01 GB versus the 7.08GB on 1G iPod Touches (of which is being replaced by this 2G/3G iPod Touch)and it came with 3.1.2 out of the box. There are a couple conflicting details in my description. First of all, it was bought at an APPLE store well after the ending date of the 2G availability with the product numbers of 3G iPod Touches, but there were no microphone headphones in the box. Second, the Blackra1n RC3 jailbreak was tethered (only 3G iPod Touches are tethered with RC3), but the device runs the iPod Touch 2G firmware (iPod2,1). All of these conflicting details cause me to be very confused and angry that Apple did not provide an easier way to determine the version of the iPod Touch. Please help me with my dilemma promptly. I have been relying on forums to supply me with the information to decide if it is 2G or 3G, but it appears there is a loophole in my case. Thanks in advance!
