Password protection for application start-up?

Is there a way of requiring a password to be entered when starting a single application?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

what would happen if you installed the application in your users folder? eg. as well as desktop, documents, downloads etc. have an 'application folder' in which the protected applications are installed (instead of the main application folder).

I'm don't think that other people would be able to access them. Never tried though.

that's a different issue. the OP wants to password protect an application from any account even from the currently logged in one. placing it in the user Applications folder won't help against that. but yes, if you put an app into the Applications folder in your home directory AND change the permissions on that folder to disallow access to other users then yes, nobody but your user will be able to run it.
