I have an almost identical problem with a garagekey keyboard - the pref file in garageband will not identify the device as being attached (I thought it was plug and play)- unless I use the computer keyboard usb slot - but this uses more power than the slot can supply on most tries and the slot is shut down, just occasionally did it allow me to use it, although there was still no sound - it did show up as a recognised device attached.
I went to miditech's web site to see if they had a driver for this device but the device does not appear under this re-badged and packaged name of garagekey so i took an educated guess as to what driver it could possibly be from the two or so hundred to choose from. The result worked on garageband and played the sound from the keyboard - unfortunately though I have an additional item of software for piano tuition which initially showed up and passed the 'test button' it still did not play a sound then after a few minutes froze. After a restart it put me back into square one again so I removed this driver.
I am of the opinion that it is a driver/compatibility problem that I have not yet resolved and presumably Apple are not aware of.
Good luck to you we both need it!!!!.
