replacing ipod shuffle with ipod nano; itunes won't recognize new device?

I just purchased ipod nano and am trying to replace my ipod shuffle with it and to transfer library from shuffle to nano. Computer/itunes not recognizing new device. Do I need to download itunes again? or any other help appreciated.

hp pavilion notebook, Windows 7

It might be worth checking on your USB drivers with that one. See the following troubleshooting document:
