What is the difference between the ExpressCard/34 slot and a SD Card Slot

I'm buying a 17inch macbook pro (refurb) and I'm trying to figure out the difference / advantage from a ExpressCard/34 slot Vs. SD card slot. Can someone please tell me what the expresscard/34 is /do. I know what the SD card slot is?

Thanks

An ExpressCard slot is basically an expansion port for your computer. If you are familiar with desktop computers, it is the notebook equivalent of an expansion slot. For example, there are ExpressCards that you can purchase that allow you to add more advanced audio components, add eSATA ports, add additional firewire and or USB ports, additional card readers... along with a host of other possibilities. An SD slot is simply a slot for an SD card.
