Problem installing iTunes 9.0.2

iTunes was working correctly then it started giving me error messages every time I tried to run the application. I tried removing iTunes and then installing again, but when it says do you wish to run iTunes after it installs, I receive an error saying iTunes helper was not correctly installed and error 7. When I try to run iTunes by clicking on the application, it says

iTunes.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point CFBagRemoveValue could not be located in the dynamic link library CoreFoundation.dll.

Okay, you've got a damaged *Apple Application Support* dll there, Cody. An iTunes version 9.0.x needs a properly functioning Apple Application Support to run properly. (A common symptom of a broken AAS is an Error 7 when launching iTunes.)

So let's try uninstalling both iTunes and Apple Application Suppport this time. When we reinstall iTunes, that should reinstall Apple Application Support as well. We'll take a few additional explicit precautions along the way too. Best to print these instructions out, because at one stage of proceedings you won't be able to use a web browser.

Preliminaries

Download and save a fresh iTunes installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install on line and don't start the iTunes install just yet.)

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Now, quit QuickTime (if you have that open) and Safari 4.0.4 (if you have that installed and open). Both applications use Apple Application Support, and they will interfere with the uninstall if you have them open.

*Uninstall phase*
Head into your "Add or Remove Programs" control panel. Uninstall iTunes. Uninstall Apple Application Support.

(From this point on until we reinstall Apple Application Support, neither QuickTime nor Safari 4.0.4 will be able to run.)

Next we'll remove any leftover program files and folders.

(1) Open "Local Disk (C:)" or whichever drive your program files are stored on.
(2) Open the "Program Files" folder.
(3) Right-click on the iTunes folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".
(4) Open the "Common files" folder.
(5) Open the "Apple" folder.
(6) Right-click on the Apple Application Support folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".

Now empty your Recycle Bin and restart the PC.

*Reinstall Phase*

After the PC restarts, do not open any other applications. Disconnect from your network and/or the internet. Switch off all your security software (firewall, antivirus and antispyware).

Now start the install by doubleclicking the iTunesSetup.exe file you downloaded earlier.

Reenable all security software prior to reconnecting to your network and/or the internet.

Did the install seem to go through okay? If so, does iTunes start launching properly again?

I greatly thank you for your time to answer my question. I was hoping you would reply to my problem. I followed your instructions except at first I ran msconfig and disabled ituneshelper and restarted in order to make sure it would uninstall correctly, probably not needed but oh well. I then removed both applications, no folders remained. I restarted, disabled my wireless card, turned off my anti-virus and firewall, installed, and iTunes ran correctly. I then restarted to make sure it would still work, and I am happy to say iTunes is still working. I still have no idea what caused this issue since I haven't done anything out of the ordinary, but I am so thankful for your help.

🙂 Excellent news, Cody! Glad you're up and running again.

Yeah, you're not alone. There's been a small spate of reports over the last few weeks of reports of perfectly-normal-and-happy Apple Application Supports getting damaged or going walkabout altogether. I'm not sure what's at the bottom of it ... I've suspected security software trouble, but the evidence for that isn't compelling.

Fingers crossed it's just a random occurence in this case ... program files can get damaged out of the blue for folks. But do let us know if you get a recurrence. I don't like the idea of program files consistently getting damaged on a PC, and so we'd try to look a little more deeply to see if there's some issue with your system at the root of things.
