Macbook pro frozen at start up?

it's just frozen at the apple logo during start up...

here's how this started:

itunes froze, so i tried to forcequit. nothing happened--the whole thing was frozen. so i manually pressed the power key and held it down. let it sit for a while. then i turned it back on. it's stuck at the opening apple logo with the white background now for like 20 min. i tried the same thing again--with the same results (i.e. holding power button down.). then i came back and found a bar partially loaded at the bottom of the screen with teh apple logo, and it's just frozen there.

this time while i let it sit to load, it shut off by itself...

please help!!

I would get out the installation disks that came with your macbook and insert install disk 1. Then power up the computer while holding down the 'c' key to boot from the disk. Select your language and continue until the menu bar appears. When you can access the menu bar, click on utilities and select 'disk utility'. Then pick out your hard drive from the menu on the left and click the 'first aid'. There you should have an option to repair the disk.

After that, restart and try booting like normal again.

Do you have another drive you can boot from? If not start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up select your language.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer.
Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and run "Repair Disk"
Note any errors.

Then, go to /Library/Startup Items and move whatever is there to your desktop. Nothing is installed in that folder so anything in there was put in by you. Now restart normally.

If you're still having problems, unplug all Firewire and USB and Ethernet, everything, from the back of your Mac. Then unplug the power. Let it sit for at least a full minute. Then plug in only your keyboard and mouse, then the power. On startup reset your PRAM: at first startup chime hold down Option-Command-p-r until it chimes three times total. Then let go and let it start. After it starts, plug in your peripherals.

It won't hurt to run some repair programs like Disk Utility and Disk Warrior from an external disk or a CD after you've got it running.
