SD card in the cd slot

I just did a very stupid thing!!!

I wanted to upload some photos from my SD card, and I accidentally put it in the cd/dvd slot instead of in the SD slot. Now it's stuck there, and I can't get it out - anyone knows if it's possible to get it out without harming the iMac, or do I have to go to the Apple Store to get help?

Stupid me 😟

Happy New Year everyone!

I had a client do that, and made the cardboard L- thingee. Worked great (got a case of Amstel for the fix; she thought I was the cats meow after that)

Anyway, I cut a small 1/8" sliver of a colored sticky (on the sticky end) about the width of the slot and placed in om the edge of the screen bezel in line with slot.

That way, my client can see about where the slot is located on the side and not try to insert "higher" up that the stickies placement.

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the good discussion. We were pretty desperate to get it out and were trying to many things that only made it get deeper inside. After reading this we were inclined to use the paperclip method, but we did not have any, and neither a piece of cardboard. However, we had a ruler that we stuck in diagonally and that did the trick too!

i did the same out of stupidness i just slotted it in luckily i could still see if you can see it i would reccomend using a pair of tweezers 😀 good luck it scared the **** out of me £1000 computer to waste 😟 but luckily if you have tweezers then its easy what you have to do is put 1 half next to the sd and the other on the back of the imac and then close the tweezers and the sd card will jerk out slowly so keep doing that then it will hopefully come out

oh, you are an absolute genius! the ruler bit was the absolute best! plastic, right thickness, and stiff enough to do the job. absolutely no damage done and card retrieved. thank you a million times.'
to everyone else who is also slot challenged and made comments, they were all great suggestions. I just felt better going with a non-metalic object, and something i would not have to create (the cardboard l-shape). Thanks to all, and especially to mette.steeman.

Thanks for your comments. I actually got it out by using a bevelled shaped plastic ruler. Inserted it at an angle, slid it gently to the right, and voila! out came the card. The ruler was a suggestion somewhere in the comments and suggestions on this topic.
Thanks for your contribution. It's great knowing that there is a good community of strangers willingto help strangers out here in this world.
Take care.

I just did the same and used the folded card trick.

THIS WORKED: Having read all of the available options - this does seem like the safest way at attempting to remove an SD card. I did it in 30 seconds by folding a business card in 2 and cutting an L-shape to make a hook, inserting at the top of the DVD drive, moving it down to the bottom and then slowly dragging out. No machine shaking or insertion of metal objects required.

Thanks for the post Cathy1956

This has happened to me twice. Stupid I know! But they really shouldn't be so close together.

First time I could still see it and used tweezers and this worked fine.

Second Time was wedged right in there. Didn't have a paper clip so tried it with a ruler.

Was a bit panicky so first few times it didn't work.

But I turned off the Mac, titled it to the side and slowly inserted the ruler at an angle and it totally worked!
I was so relieved!!

After throwing myself into a full blown panic about doing the very same thing, I logged on here...I am grateful for the card & double-sided tape suggestion because that absolutely worked!!! I am also glad to know that I am not the only one that this happened to...of course, with the 2 slots being so close together, I can see why it happens! Thanks again for all the suggestions. You saved me a ride towards NYC & a lot of money!!

Thanks for this.

I don't believe putting the SD card in the optical drive is a "stupid mistake" . . . though I felt stupid, the moment I did it . . .

The two slots are very close in proximity and, if one is accustomed to simply reaching over to slide in a CD, it's a mistake bound to happen.

Hence, it occurred to me others surely had done this, and there must be a thread with solutions.

The paper clip method didn't seem advisable, given the pressure of metal within the optical drive.

We tried a folded business card, and that worked, without cutting into an L shape, or shaking the machine. My SD card was not pushed in far, because I panicked, the moment I realized what I'd done.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions.

Now that we're in 2011, perhaps Apple will recognize this as an ongoing problem, and see the design flaw. No reason the two slots couldn't be on opposite sides of the monitor . . .
