Den

I have used Apples Disk Utility to convert my DVD home movie (which is a Video_TS file) into a CDR file on the IMAC. You do this by choosing choosing "DVD/CD Master" from the Image Format pop-up menu on the Disk Utility when creating a new Image.

Now I want to turn the CDR file into a MPEG-4 file.

Thanks for your reply.

It seems I will have to convert from Video_TS file to MP4 file (as the option from CDR file to MP4 is not available on Handbrake). This is okay.

When converting to MP4 file on handbrake what are the choices I need to make?

Format: here I have chosen MP4
Codecs: Here I have chosen MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio
Framerate: Same as source
Encoder: FFmpeg

Under Quality
Target Size (MB): Nothing is filled here
Average Bitrate kbps: 1500
Constant Quality: 50%

GrayScale Encoding: This is not ticked
2-pass encoding: This is ticked

Are these choices okay?

Thanks for your help

Yes

The source and output size are the same. I think the difference in image quality could be that the DVD and MP4 file open in different size window. This could explain the difference in picture quality when played on the computer.

I am wondering what the size values actually mean. It's 704 x 576.

Thanks

Yes 704 x 576 is a pretty small image, it would start looking pixelated if viewed in a window more than about half the size of a 17" display.

a 17" display is 1440 x 900 pixels
a 20" display is 1680 x 1050 pixels
a 24" display is 1920 by 1200 pixels
