Delkin Cardbus 32 CompactFlash adapter kernel panic

Is anyone else getting a kernel panic when ejecting a Delkin Cardbus 32 Compact Flash adapter? The adapter works fine on insertion and moving files but the moment I eject my kernel panics and I have to reboot my laptop.

This is with the drivers that Delkin most recently released for 10.4.X....

I am running 10.4.2, btw...

Hi, Thomas, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Are you using the Eject key to dismount the CF card from your desktop, or dragging the card's icon to the Trash (which also dismounts it) before using the mechanical button beside the card slot to physically eject the adapter? If not, do. Ejecting the card (or adapter) physically before dismounting it might well cause a KP, and could result in lost data and/or a damaged card.

I'm interested to see that the Delkin card requires a downloadable driver for use with a Mac, and I wonder why. My two CardBus flash media adapters (one for CF and one for Smartmedia) require no third-party software at all, in Mac OS 8.6, 9.1. 9.2.2, Jaguar or Panther. Those aren't high-speed adapters like the Delkin, though; perhaps that's the difference.

Hi Thomas,

I've seen the "You did not properly disconnect and your device will now go up in smoke" message when not waiting quite long enough to remove a device in a few situations, but not a KP. Before removing the device, try waiting an extra 30 seconds or so after you dismount it and see if that makes any difference.

If not, I suspect the driver and/or the CF card/adapter combination may be at fault. Have you tried more than one brand of CF card?

Seems broken that i can cause a panic

No argument here (mine usually takes less than a second to dismount). Don't know what causes it, but as I said, I've seen it a few times before. Now I'm curious if they were Delkin devices (but remembering whose hardware it happened with is another story).

but if I can use it, the extra 15 seconds isn't a biggie.

Agreed, that's the bottom line. Glad it works for you.
