Mouse Acceleration / Precision

Is Apple planning on putting in a feature to turn OFF mouse acceleration?

Or is it already there and I've missed it?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Mouse Acceleration (PC terminology) - move the cursor all the way to the left-hand side of the screen. Now quickly move the mouse 2 inches to the right. Now do the same exercise again, only this time when you move the mouse to the right, do it really slowly, again, 2 inches. If you see the difference in cursor position then you've just experienced Mouse Acceleration.

Scroll Acceleration (my terminology because I've never seen it before) - open up a long (in height) webpage. Now make sure you are at the top of the page. Slowly click (non-Apple mouse) or slide (Apple mouse) and scroll the webpage slowly downwards for one finger length, notice how precise and slow it is. Now repeat the exercise, this time click or slide fast, if you see the difference in the one finger length then you have just experienced Scroll Acceleration.

Both are extremely annoying 'features' that PC users have the ability to turn off ... thank god.

If someone out there could explain how to turn these 'features' off I would be eternally happy, it is making my use of my Mac extremely annoying.

Hi

I also found this completely annoying when I switched to the Mac from my PC. In fact it seems stupid but I nearly sent the iMac back so I know what you mean.

I managed to find a solution... I bought a Microsoft Mouse!

Once the software is installed this gives an extra button in System Preferences to tweak the mouse. Inside the Microsoft Mouse settings box you can change the Pointer Options and select IntelliPoint Pointer Speed. Setting this towards the right speeds up the mouse and takes away the acceleration problem. I have mine set about 4 bars from the right and now happy.

This only seems to take effect when you are actually logged in so the Login Screen is still the old style mouse speed.

I've been using this for about a year or so and now very happy 🙂 Its not as flash as the Mac mouse but needs must.

I purchased a basic Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical USB mouse. This looks like the one but can't be 100% sure.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Andy. I appreciate your idea to get a Microsoft (lol) mouse to fix the issue 😉

But I love my Logitech MX518 mouse and share it and my monitor using a USB+DVI KVM switch to my PC. So when I press the KVM switch and my screen flicks on to my Mac I suffer the problem, when I switch back to the PC I breath a sigh of relief that the problem has gone!

I have found a 'fix' for the mouse acceleration by googling and reading the mountains of moans about this issue. And fixed it by entering this into the terminal:

defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1

The difference it makes to be able to go back to NORMAL mouse operation is fantastic, and that is half of my pain gone 🙂

I still need to be able to turn off the Scroll Acceleration because I didn't find any fixes for that. I don't appreciate having to manually enter anything into Terminal to fix a problem!

Apple, please fix this to let the user decide for themselves!!

$20 to turn off something that is an annoyance ... no thanks!

The only reason I got a Mac Mini in the first place was to check out making iPhone apps. But now my iPhone wont update apps or even download new ones, and my iTunes is having the same issues, and no help is forth-coming on that issue, I wonder if the hassle is worth it in the long run.

Now Google are bringing out their phone I wonder if it'd be easier to stick with that and dump the Mac.

I've narrowed down the issue with my iPhone and iTunes both not updating and not able to download new apps ... it turns out I can't buy anything at all on iTunes so it must be an account error. Maybe my moaning about their Scroll Acceleration made them block my account 😟

Just kidding. But I am slightly happier now, knowing that it is their end and not mine.

Still. Scroll Acceleration just reared its ugly head again between this post and my last, therefore I'm still grumpy.

i connected a mini mac to a quadra vista (rose) KVM switch, with a touch screen.
The mouse response from the quadra vista seems to be accelerated (the movement ratio is not one to one) as my finger moves out of the center of the screen to any of the four sides, the mouse pointer drifts farther in the same direction.
on the other hand, the mouse that is directly connected to the mac moves slower than the mouse connected to the KVM.
the mac is running on 10.6(intel, i tried "USB overdrive" and "Microsoft desktop", i even tried the :defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1.
but nothing works, the touch screen and mouse work perfectly when i connect my dell (windows XP) but not with the mac snow leopard.
im trying to find out if there is any were on the 10.6 were i could set the mouse ration 1:1 or something.....

Ashley, I absolutely agree with you. Just bought a mini and the acceleration for mouse movement and scrolling just plain suck. Haven't had a Mac in many years, last one was a 266 iMac with 9.04. Was about to try your terminal code but found a more complete fix as relayed below. Thanks.

Tom in London, I'm guessing you've never NOT experienced "mouse acceleration" or "scroll acceleration" if you can't recognize it.

Anyway, I practically never install the Logitech drivers on my Windows computers since the built-in drivers always meet my needs. Just took a chance and installed the Logitech Control Center version 3.1 for my MX500 on my as-delivered OS X 10.6 and rebooted. Immediately the mouse movement is normal and the two thumb buttons were set for "left arrow" and "right arrow" like I prefer to navigate back and forth in my browser. All I had to adjust was vertical scrolling speed, turned acceleration off and adjusted the speed to around 3/4ths max and now I'm a happy mouser.

In Logitech Control Center:
Tracking Speed Multiplier: 1
Wheel: Speed set to 4th mark from Fast, acceleration set to "None"

Thanks, Logitech, for the fix, now quit making goofy ergonomic new mouses and revert back to the MX500/518 et cetera design!

Ashley, only two computers on the KVM? Consider running two mice, bypassing the KVM switch, making it a "KV" switch.

I run four computers on my KVM and use two mice and two monitors. One mouse and monitor to the KVM for three of the computers and one mouse and monitor to the "main" computer. The keyboard is the only item shared between all four computers.
