This is different from the not-uncommon white screen error. Presuming you've already done the five R's (http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/ipodtouch/), also make sure your unit is fully charged.

If you still have no success, visit your local Apple Store (if you're near one) and consult the Genius Bar.

I promise this won't be of any help, I am merely commiserating. This is exactly what is happening to me. 1st Gen iPod Touch, most recent software, dead dead DEAD iPod. (I'm running OSX 10.5.8, that's the only difference I can see.) Judging by the responses you received, the only option is to go to the Genius Bar, which I plan to do within the next week as time allows. I'll update with any news.

The Genius Bar was no help and told me my iPod was dead. Fortunately I have a friend who has the magic touch with Mac products and he was able to fix my iPod thus:

    1. Hold down the Power and the Home button simultaneously.
    2. When/If the Apple comes back let go of the Power button but continue to hold down the Home button.
    3. iPod is aliiiiiiive!

We also to the extra, precautionary step of reinstalling the latest OS and not restoring from back up. I had to reinstall my apps and then set them back up, however my iPod is now running as quickly as it did when I first purchased it. (It had been running slower and slower with every OS update until it would take several seconds for the keyboard to even come up, let alone accept entry.)

    Best of luck!
