g4 Titanium hinges

I had one of my hinges break on me even though I baby my pbook. I noticed that the hinges seemed to be getting a little stiff and shortly thereafter the left side snapped on me. The design on these fragile little hinges is, well...lacking to say the least - there must be a recall on them, right? Can anyone help?

Thanks for the links. I can't believe that apple would make such a thin little ( EXPENSIVE AND HARD-TO-REPLACE) hinge out of aluminum. I have had my titanium for less than a year, and I haven't dropped it, bumped it, jarred it, or been rough with it in any way, and it has treated me well up until this point. I was just beginning to be a big mac proponent (and I don't mean McDonald's, he he), but this experience has left me with an overwhelming taste of sour apple in my mouth.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your help in this matter - Thank You

Hi David,

If you bought it new and have had it less than a year (not sure if that's possible given how long the Ti has been discontinued), then you are still covered under the hardware warranty and the hinge may be replaced by AppleCare at no charge. Contact AppleCare asap.

Yours is not an uncommon story. I believe the lube dries out and/or the hinges get slightly out of alignment and/or heat from the PB causes the inner part of the hinge to swell, causing it to bind, and eventually fail, as yours has.

My hinges have always been just a bit too tight for my liking, and recently they started getting a bit "sticky," especially after I used the PB for awhile and it got warmer, so I used TiGlide and the tool supplied by Radtech to condition and loosen my hinges a bit, and aligned the display, and now I'm much more comfortable with my hinges (I no longer hold my breath every time I open/close my Ti's display). At this point, barring physical trauma, I no longer anticipate my hinges will someday snap.

Here's hoping you're still covered under AC. Good luck.

Thanks for the idea, but unfortunatlely I bought my book used and I am quite sure that applecare won't cover it. I haven't been rough with it, but the previous owner may have. I wish I had had some of the TiGlide stuff that you referred to because I did notice that the display was getting a little stiff as to the opening and closing of it, and the thought did occur to me (I think it was the day before my hinge broke) to put some sort of lubricant on it, but I didn't know how urgent the situation was. I hadn't heard anything about this hinge issue and I never suspected that the hinges might be as flimsy as they are.

I think I am going to buy a set of steel hinges that I found on eBay and attempt to do the repair myself. I can't afford $300 or more for an Apple tech to do it for me, so I guess I'll take my chances. If you have any warnings or advice on the repair job I would greatly appreciate them, and thank you again for all your help.

Hi David,

You're welcome.

If you have any warnings or advice on the repair job I would greatly appreciate them

I have not done the repair nor seen it done, but I've read plenty about it here in Discussions. If you're not already pretty handy repairing things, I would not recommend starting down that road with this repair. It involves dismantling most of your PB.

If you do tackle the job, you may want to do a search in both the Usage and Display folders and see if there are still any threads on the topic (they get removed after a certain period of inactivity). Be very careful of the wires running through both hinges; every reference to this area that I've ever seen has started off with a warning about how extremely delicate it is.

Good luck to you.
