iPhone not working with Windows 7. Message asks to install 64-bit version

Full error message; "This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes".

I have just bought my wife a brand new iPhone 32Gb 3S for Christmas & now it's the most expensive paperweight I own. My wife has also just bought me a brand new 16Gb Nano, which also now comes up with error messages when connected, saying that it faild to load and I need to disconnect it & reconnect it. Naturally, this does not work either.

I'm running Windows 7 & the current 64 bit version of iTunes, but no matter what I do, the above error message comes up.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, very carefully following the exact process & order as detailed by apple, with no luck.
Everywhere I look, there seems to be references to a piece of software that should exist on my computer; "Apple Mobile Device Application Support", yet this is not to be found anywhere.

I have spent over 2 hours on the phone with the Apple techies, with no results whatsoever.

Can ANYONE assist me as I'm going completely bonkers & am about to storm into the Apple store and demand my money back?

Dell, Windows 7

Thanks Tamara & everyone for your feedback.
I havethe Apple guy calling again this evening to try and sort this out. So far I have spent in excess of 3 hours with them, still with no result. Even tey are stumped and say that they haven't come across this before - even though a 5 second search on Google locates many, many instances of the same issue!!
If that doesn't work, i'll try the 32-bit version instead.

If there are more ideas, please keep them coming!!

I'm having the same exact problem. I've uninstalled quicktime and iTunes, restarted my computer and then re-installed iTunes, but no luck. Keep getting the same message: required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes, then install the 64-bit version of itunes. BTW, I used iTunes a couple of days ago with no problem. I don't know what changed.

Does anyone know what to do???

The MSCONFIG workaround requires I-tunes and I-phone code to be installed on the machine. The problem is that I-tunes will not install on XP 64-bit machines. It will install on Vista but NOT XP. MSCONFIG requires the user to allow code that can't be on the machine until it's been installed! Apple staff have confirmed this to me over the phone after I spent half a day trying to figure it out.
There is an option, which I know some Apple staff are aware of, which has been set up by a Japanese kid and can be found here:

There are also a couple of 3rd party I-pod readers which, if I name them, will probably get me kicked off the list. Why the f*ck can't Apple sort this out. XP 64 bit has been around for FIVE YEARS!!!
