Screen Sharing problem

I saw a few similar posts about this, but nothing in them worked for me.

I changed the name of our kitchen computer (it got moved), and now screen sharing to it stopped working. When I try to connect, with the right password, I get:

*Authentication failed to kidsmac.*

Please verify you have entered the correct name and password.

I get the same error if I try to go via url to vnc://kidsmac

However, if I try using JollysFastVNC, it connects fine.

I have tried removing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ScreenSharing.plist on each computer & rebooting, but that didn't help. The firewall is not enabled on that machine. I even rebooted the router.

I am able to connect fine when using afp://kidsmac

To make matters worse-- when I change the name back, I get the same error.

The strange thing is that it works if I try to navigate via safari to vnc://192.168.1.8

So maybe there is something being cached somewhere else name-wise.

When I changed the name on the other computer, I changed it in multiple places:

preferences -> sharing -> computer name
preferences -> network -> ethernet -> advanced -> wins -> computer name

and verified that
preferences -> network -> airport -> advanced -> wins -> computer name
was right too.

Is there something else I need to change or flush?

Thanks,

-jamie

From an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, try the command:

klist

Klist lists the Kerberos principal and Kerberos tickets held in a credentials cache, or the keys held in a keytab file.

It is possible you have Kerberos tickets that have not timed out yet.

You could then try

kdestroy

you can find more information via "man klist" and "man kdestroy" while in the Terminal session.

If that doesn't work, you could try rebooting everyone 🙂

Hi,
I encountered exactly the same problem (except that even JollysFastVNC couldn't connect). I tried everything and it almost drove me nuts – but now I found an easy solution:
Quite simply the hard disk was too full. A backup file had been growing in one of the invisible directories. And obviously Screensharing requires some free hard disk space (for caching or so; I don't know).
I simply started the mac in target mode (connecting it via a firewire cable and starting it up holding T) and hooked it up onto my MacBook.
Then I used Onyx to show hidden files and deleted the mighty backup file. Then restarted.
Now everything is perfect again – I could connect to the mac using screensharing on the first attempt.
Maybe this can help?

Good luck

Reinhard
