iPhone Activation on iTunes

Went to the AT&T site to activate my original iPhone and the site indicated that I could do it all using itunes, a credit card, and a SS card. The site said to follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to activate iPhone and choose a plan. I connected my phone iPhone to iTunes and there are no onscreen instructions that i can see right off the bat. looked at the site and all that, but nothing so far. Any help would be appreciated. Thx, iPhobia

You opened itunes on your computer, then plugged iphone into a USB port on your computer?

Did the iphone show up under devices (left side of screen in itunes)?

Do you have the latest itunes software?

I get the tabs for the iPhone - summary,info,applications,ringtones,music,movies,tv shows,podcasts,itunes u, and photos.

Generally AT&T prefers you use a new SIM when you change iphones.

What happens if you restore the iphone and start as a new iphone?

I haven't restored my settings, that doesn't erase content does it? Might as well, can't hurt. I used to have service, have a phone number, but there is no option to do so. Thanks,

Always start with a fresh unused sim card. Also, if the iPhone has been used on a previous account that no longer is active, restore the phone as a new phone. This will insure that iTunes knows this is a new account. If you leave the old info on the iPhone, iTunes will not work correctly in activating the iPhone.

Once the iPhone is activated, you can then restore to your previous backup.

I've done a dozen of these original iPhone activations this past year and my instructions have never failed.
