Mac Serial Number from Backup

Hey Guys,

I've just had two macbooks stolen, both were backed up using Time Machine. The police have asked for serial numbers and I have misplaced them. Is there anyway you can find out the serial numbers from the backups?

Thanks,

Simon

as Thomas said, serial numbers are not recorded anywhere in the backups. getting them from apple if the computers were registered is your best bet. if they weren't registered then the best you can get from the backup is the MAC addresses of your stolen macs. a MAC address is a unique identifier of the motherboard so it might be useful for identifying the stolen computers too. although the police might not know about it. MAC addresses of the backed up computers are stored in extended attributes of backups. i can explain how to get them out but try getting serial numbers from apple first.
