2G or 3G?

I received an iPod Touch 8GB for Xmas. It is using the 3.1 software. Before I buy accessories (like an AC adaptor), how can I tell if it a 2G or 3G model?

Thanks.

It's my understanding that the 8 GB was not updated in 2009 therefore still a 2nd Gen.

Only the 32 GB & 64 GB versions of the "Late 2009" model are considered 3rd Generation.

As far as accessories, with the exception of the location of the light sensor, nearly all 2nd Generation Touch accessories are fully compatible with the 3rd Generation Touches. Physical size is also the same.

Lots of good info here...

Sorry, I'm confused then. It says in your support section

"The iPod touch (Late 2009) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. *All iPod touch models introduced in *Late 2009 have two or three lines of text below the capacity engraving.* The prior iPod touch *(2nd generation) had four lines of text or more.*"

My 8GB Touch only has two lines of text on the back, so i have been thinking it was a 3G.

My support section?

I'm just another user like you.

My guess is that it's an 8 GB manufactured in 2009 but it's identical to the 8 GB 2nd Gens where nothing was upgraded.

Get your model number here...

Settings > General > About > Model

8 GB, "2nd Gen" => model MB528LL
8 GB, "Late 2009" (3rd Gen) => model MC086LL

According to some on this forum, since there have been no changes or upgrades to the 8 GB model, the 2nd and 3rd Gens are essentially the same device.
