The rechargeable batteries would seem to be the smartest choice (yes, the Eneloop Sony's will work), but they don't last very long. Here's my experience with my Magic Mouse until the batteries get down to the 20% level at which point you get the screen warning. I use my computer from two to four hours per day. Alkaline batteries, 40 days; Eneloop rechargables, 14 days; and lithium batteries which I haven't finished testing yet, are still at 100% from 21 Dec until present.

The rechargeables start out at a disadvantage since they start with a voltage of 1.2V instead of 1.5V. So they are at 60% from the get-go. However, they are very cost effective.

Good luck with yours,

I would not get NiCad rechargeable batteries (for the Magic Mouse) because they weigh noticeably more than regular or lithium disposables. They do not last long enough per charge, and the extra weight will throw off the feel of the mouse.

The best solution (at least for me) is to use a mouse (and keyboard) with a "tail," so that you don't need to worry about such details. 🙂

I use Sanyo eneloops in both my Magic Mouse & Wireless keyboard, and never turn off either one. They last for many weeks and have very low self-discharge, so if they sit unused for awhile, they retain their charge.

I also use them in SLR cameras & flashes, where their performance is outstanding.

Costco usually sells kits with 8 AA's and 2 or 4 AAA's plus 4-cell charger for around $20. A full charge takes about 10 hours, so I charge them overnight.

I have had my magic mouse and keyboard since mid November and have been impressed with the battery drain...I am at about 35 percent on the mouse on my original set. I use my previous tailed keyboard as it has a numeric pad, so not sure about the keyboard. I have at least 8 rechargeable batteries in my house that I use for various purposed, about 3 different varieties. Once I switch out these original batteries, I will experiment with the different brands I have to see which holds a charge the longest. I can't imagine not using rechargeables knowing that they are available...I have a charger that services all types of batteries and have a full set of every variety. No dead battery problems.

Strange...I have energizer rechargeables as well and the work fine.
I'll check the specific variety.
People advocating for disposables based on the long life are definitely right about that...just started using my rechargeable and have been disappointed with charge life. But I have at least 3 pairs of rechargeables that I had prior to my wireless mouse, so I just just deal with the inconvenience of changing them more frequently.

I got my Magic Mouse on 2/2/2010. I use it with a wired keyboard on my iMac. The mouse is on every day from 6 AM to at least 11 PM, with a decent amount of use all day. I shut it off at night. Based on this use, the batteries that came with the Magic Mouse lasted just over a month, as I replaced them on 3/5.

I am now using Energizer Ultimate Lithium (4 pack at Target was about $10), and they are still at 100%, with nearly 5 full days of use.

Hi all,
My best deal up to now is :

2000mA/h Rechargeable Energizer NIMH (green).

http://www.greenbatteries.com/energizer-batteries.html

New set fully charged : *1 month.*

I Bought 4 batteries (2 sets) and will stick to that.
Just use a cheap NiMH charger (detecting full charge and switching then to trickle charge).

It puts 165 ma so a set is charged overnight.
I use BetterTouchToll to monitor the mouse : it gives a warning at 20% then I replace with the other set and charge the first.

It's cool.

I bought my system on the 20th of Feb. I'm still on the original batteries. MightyMonitor shows the mouse still has over 50% (looks to be 60ish percent) battery life. I keep my mouse and keyboard on...never turned them off. I use my system daily, for webbing, e-mailing, remote administration of linux/windows machines, and some web development.

What are you guys doing that's draining the mouse batteries so much? I can already see that I'm going to have to buy a pack of batteries and dedicate them to this system, but it may be another 2 months before I replace the current set.
