Unlock "out-of-contract" iphone

My contract with AT&T and my original iPhone is up and I have moved to Swaziland, Southern region of Africa, doing humanitarian work. I want to get this phone unlocked so that I can use it here and I would also prefer not to perform a hack on the phone. I spoke with AT&T and have it escalated to corporate and expect an answer in a few days. As the 2 years is up and I no longer live in the US has anyone had success in getting an original iPhone legally unlocked? Should I talk to Apple as well?

If I understand correctly the activation is controlled by the iTunes servers which does a lookup of the IMEI to see if it is locked to a network. The carrier is the one to authorize the unlock. I have also heard that after the 2 year contract the IMEI is released. Can anyone verify this and give me feedback please.

Just want to check if you were able to unlock your iPhone successfully? I tried calling AT&T this afternoon and was on hold with two different customer support representative and they said AT&T and Apple has a contract that would not allow US iPhone users to unlock even after completing their 2 year contract. That really hurts. I am hoping this forum helps me find a way to get my iPhone unlocked legally.

Class action - how funny and best of luck with that. In the U.S. there is NO LAW that requires a carrier to unlock a carrier locked iPhone - none whatsoever. A carrier can unlock a carrier locked phone when requested, but this is the carrier's choice and the carrier's choice only. There is no law in the U.S. that requires a carrier to do so.

This has been going on with EVERY carrier in the U.S. for a long time - people have been living with this in the U.S. with EVERY cell phone manufacturer and with EVERY carrier for a long time and I don't reading any reports about a class action or a threat of one in regards to ANY other cell phone manufacturer and/or with ANY other carrier.

This is just silly, I received a Iphone 2g, and since I'm in Europe, I don't have an at&t sim card. What's the harm of releasing the unlock code after this many years? So people are now unlocking their phones illegaly and only because there is no law that says they must give an unlock code after let's say 2 years.
Pretty wierd if you ask me.
Bw if they do unlock it illegaly I read that you can download and upload all games for free, so apple won't receive $.
I think it would be wiser if they just gave the unlock code after 2 years so people can leggaly use the phone and itunes.

From the iTunes app store? If so, you read wrong, and it is a download from the app store only, not an upload. And it isn't Apple that keeps the $ for paid apps. It is the app developer for a paid app that keeps the $ and the party you would be stealing and cheating the money from if this were possible.

I think it would be wiser if they just gave the unlock code after 2 years so people can leggaly use the phone and itunes.

Apple and AT&T obviously don't agree. You develop and manufacturer a cell phone and/or a cellular network and you can do whatever you want. And if it were possible to download all paid apps from the iTunes app store for free with a hacked iPhone, why on earth would Apple be interested in doing so or why would the app developers who would be cheated out of the money be interested in Apple doing this?

If you are referring to downloading and installing unofficial software from unknown and untrusted sources, that is possible with a hacked iPhone. And the only reports about malware on an iPhone have come from downloading and installing unofficial software from unknown and untrusted sources with a hacked iPhone. Best of luck with that.
