Mail hangs on search

Is this with POP or IMAP accounts, or both?

Do you know how large your principal mailboxes might be?

In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail/the POP account folder for this one account. In the POP account folder control-click on INBOX.mbox folder and choose Get Info. How large is it? If you open the INBOX.mbox folder, does it have more than one Info.plist file and one Messages folder and one Attachments folder? Same questions about the Sent Messages.mbox folder, also?

Size you report should NOT be a concern -- individual mailboxes (xxxx.mbox folders) can work if below 2 GB.

Does it react the same whether the search is, say, on a From or Subject versus Entire Message?

Do you always have plenty of free space on your hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?

Another question I should have asked is whether you see any trouble when using a Spotlight search?

With Mail open, click on Mail in the menubar and choose About Mail -- what version and build is indicated?

I've had this problem since installing Snow Leopard
Do you have a solution? I am using a MacPro3,2 with plenty of disk space

I am having this problem too, just since updating to Snow Leopard. Mail worked okay to begin with, and works fine otherwise, but for some time now searches of the "To" field have caused the program to hang. Now, however, it's got more snarled up: whenever I start Mail and try to do a search, it "sticks" on the "To" field and I can't get it to search anything else. It just hangs immediately on typing a character in the search form.

I'm having the same problem - its driving me nuts! Seemed to have happened spontaneously. Icon keeps going round and round. I've checked the Preferences, and all the settings - they seem fine. Its only one of many accounts - that I have with gmail. Anyone?

I don't have gmail. Could it be that some screwup in synchronization with iPhone has corrupted the data?
