itunes wont put music on my iphone

Bought an iphone (3gs 16gb) yesterday and downloaded itunes to laptop.
Added a couple of cds to itunes and connected iphone to laptop, iphone appeared in itunes and synced with itunes, bookmarks sent to iphone but no music (ipod showing 'no content')
Purchased a couple of songs from itunes store via iphone (ipod now has content) connect iphone to laptop again, synced with itunes and the songs I purchased transfer to laptop ok but disappear from iphone (ipod showing 'no content')
Purchased a song from itunes store via laptop, connect iphone to laptop again, iphone syncs but again no music is sent to iphone (still 'no content' in ipod)..

This is my first iphone/ipod and the first time I have used itunes so I could well be making a basic mistake.
Any help appreciated.

Do this:

1. Open Computer from the Start menu.
2. From the Organize menu, choose Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders," make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected.
5. Click OK.
6. Navigate to the following location by either typing it into the address bar, copying and pasting it into the address bar, or clicking through the folder hierarchy listed:

C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes

7. Right-click the SC Info folder shown and on the shortcut menu, choose Delete.
8. Restart the computer.
