Access an IP device from outside network...

Hello,

I have setup an IP thermostat device from my home. The device is connected via ethernet cable directly to my AE router. Through a web browser, I connected to the device via the wireless local netowrk, and changed the network settings to "static" , using the default address 10.0.1.193, port 80.

Now I would like to access the device remotely (actually via an iphone app). I entered the "MAC" address of the device (00:11:49:00:81:0e), and port 80, but I am unable to access (from outside the wireless network). Do I need to specifically configure the IP device using Airport Utility to allow access? Am I using the wrong IP address (or DynDNS address)?

Help appreciated,
Kurt

You can't address that device by MAC address, only by IP address. You'll also need to configure your AirPort router to map port 80 to that device using the Advanced/Port Mapping panel of AirPort Utility. Once that's done, you should be able to address the device at the WAN IP address of your router as provided by DynDNS.

I have done some more research, and apparently I need to enable "port forwarding" on the Airport for this specific device IP address. This will allow the access from the thermostat's webpage for remote access.

I have gotten as far as finding the "port mapping" window on the utility. I know the port the device is using, 80, and its ip address. Just not sure how to fill out the window of the port setup assistant.

Choose a service? - not sure but is this a remote login???
Public UDP? Public TCP? ... private? Also not sure what to put in these.

Any suggestions? Unfortunately the companies tech support is closed Sundays.

Thanks,

Since port 80 is the one involved in Web sites, I'd choose "Personal Web Sharing". I'd leave the UDP port fields empty. Supply the fixed address of your thermostat (10.0.1.193) as the "Private IP Address".
