Getting "Image not supported" message

Had a Macbook with a 60 gig HD- got full so I moved the library to an external HD. Got a new Macbook for christmas, moved the library to the new Mac but there's something VERY wrong. When I try to access many of the photos it won't let me, saying it can't locate the originals, even though we did import the originals. Also, I'm trying to use a new digital scrapbooking program that I was unable to use very well with the old Mac b/c of the too full HD. when I try to access the photos to put them into the digital scrapbook, it says "image not supported" ***?? what did I do wrong putting these photos in and what do I do to fix it??? Thanks!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing

If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

Dear Terence
I migrated my photo's from an earlier macbookpro to this new one and seem to have a problem with getting the photos to zoom in in the first instance
I can't get it closer than showing 9 photos at a time.

secondly when I double click on some photo's I get a fuzzy exclamation mark on a fuzzy white circle.

Thirdly I have tried to follow your advices but I cannot determine whether I am running a managed or referenced Library. I have checked the advanced preferences and cannot see any reference to this.

I would be grateful for your help.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
