How to stop downloading 10,000 old emails

I've just got a new iPhone 3G today, and have managed to start receiving emails from a POP account on it (although I can't yet send any; another question...)

The phone has found the 'loads of emails' on this account, and is now downloading them in batches, going back in time, each time it fetches mail. Following another suggestion on here that worked for someone else, I created a new archive folder for these emails on my Mac, and removed them from the Inbox into here so that the Inbox is now empty, but still they come.

I'm sure that there's something really stupid I'm doing, so would appreciate it being pointed out ever so gently...

With thanks.

This means the messages remain on the incoming mail server for the account.

Transferring the messages received with the Mail.app on your Mac from the account's Inbox to a user created mailbox will not remove the messages from the server unless you have selected remove from server when moved from Inbox for the account settings to remove messages from the server.

What is your account setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded with the Mail.app on your Mac? With the Mail.app on your Mac, you can remove messages from the server manually, or remove the messages from the server via webmail access for the account using a browser.

Allan,

Thanks for your reply, and for putting me right on the other 'solution'.

At the moment, the Mail.app doesn't remove messages from the server at all, it seems (I don't think I've ever looked at this before). Would you recommend that I remove them all, then, and have it set to remove them after retrieval? I have also been accessing them via webmail sometimes, also, which I suppose I won't now be able to do, although perhaps I don't now need to, thanks to the iPhone.

Not that I fully understand such things (obviously) but having looked at some other Q&As, it would seem that an IMAP set-up would be better than the POP one I have; should I see if this is possible?

Thanks again, and with best wishes,
Jeremy

Actuallly, I seem to have solved the issue with sending emails — something to do with SMTP authentication, I think — although the downloading is still an issue. Or rather it owuld be if I could now receive any emails at all. Now, when I check for emails, the actvity wheel spins for a bit, and then stops; no error message and no emails either, as though it hasn't found any. Things are working fine on my Mac, and the phone has now been synched to it a few times since, but still no joy. Am having to check for emails via my webmail on Safari, now...
