How to stop Safari from automatically unzipping downloaded .gz files

When downloading gzip files (.gz) with Safari 4.04, the files automatically get unzipped. This makes it impossible to verify file integrity with MD5. This automatic unzipping does not happen when downloading files with Firefox. How do I disable this feature with Safari and unzip after MD5 verification?

Thanks

Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2), Safari 4.04

Open the General tab of Safari's preferences and set it not to open safe files.
