Logic board or battery dead?
Hi all,
I have a 15" Macbook. The other day I was using it with a battery I bought about 9 months ago and only use infrequently, once a week or so. The battery was at about 70% charge. Suddenly the macbook shut down, there was a quiet sizzling sound and brown smoke curled from the USB port, accompanied by a nasty smell. The macbook wouldn't turn on after this.
However, after removing the battery the computer seemed to work fine with the power connected, and has done ever since. I've now tried testing the battery with the laptop again, and it won't register - while it's fitted in the Macbook I get the 'X' symbol over the battery icon, meaning that the Macbook doesn't detect a battery. And the charge lights won't work on the battery either.
I phoned the people who sold me the battery - they say it's probably the logic board, rather than the battery, that's dead, and the brown smoke would suggest this too, I guess. However, as there are no lights on the battery, despite it being on 70% charge when the Macbook died, wouldn't this imply the battery is dead, perhaps along with the logic board? Basically the people who sold me the battery don't want to replace it, saying it's not the battery that's gone wrong. I was interested in the opinions of people here.
Unfortunately it's difficult for me to test the battery with another 15" Macbook, and the local apple store I imagine won't have these older models in stock to test either.
Thanks
