any way to automate French accents???

Does anyone know if you can set up Mac OSX and Mail to auto correct certain words with accented characters. For example I write many emails in French, and it would be great to not have to tyoe "e + option+e" in order to type words like "été" or "préféré".

In MS Office's Word for example you can add words to the Auto Correct menu so that when you type French words, the accents are automatically added and you never have to worry about going back or slowing down to type in the accents.

Does anyone know if Mac Mail can be programmed to do this?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Go to System Preferences -> Language & Text and click the Text tab. Here, you can add system-wide text replacements. Then you have to enable text replacement in individual apps, so go to Mail, make a new message and choose Edit -> Substitutions and make sure Text Replacement is checked. You can do the same in Safari (for forums like this one) by control-clicking in a text field on a form and doing the same thing with the Substitutions menu there.

Have you considered using a different keyboard layout, like US International PC or Canadian French which make it easier to type accented characters? These can be activated in system prefs/language & text/input sources.

System prefs/language & text/text/symbol and text substitution offers system-wide autocorrection options that should work in Mail, but I don't know whether that will meet your needs.
