Transferring iTunes library via Bluetooth

I have been reading on the Discussions how important it is to make backups of the iTunes music library, and need a little more information about how to do this...

As my music library is about 22 GB, using CDs is not a practicable solution, as it would take so many of them. From what I've read, 5 DVDs would be sufficient. However my PB does not have a Superdrive for burning DVDs.....

So, I need to get my files copied onto a computer that can burn DVDs, right?
As I haven't yet understood what I've read about transferring files from one computer to another, I wondered if this could be done wirelessly, via Bluetooth? I easily transferred photos from a cell phone to my PB via Bluetooth, and this is where I got the idea to ask if I could do the same with the music I have in iTunes?? Could I transfer it this way from my computer to the one that has the capability to burn DVDs?

Another solution mentioned is an external HD. Is this a large gizmo? About how expensive?

Also, in order to burn a data CD/DVD as backup of my music library, I see the first step is to place the whole library into a playlist. OK, but will this take up a whole extra 22 GB on my computer's HD?.......because it doesn't have that much free space..

(I don't know what a "data CD" is - perhaps does this hold more music than the music CDs I originally downloaded into iTunes? My iTunes window says I have 4696 songs, 22.77 GB in my library -- how many CDs would be needed to copy this amount of material anyway?)

Also, if I take my PB to Apple, can they install the Superdrive for burning DVD's to it? Am I likely to get in any kind of a mess if I do so?

Thanks for the answers............

Hi srjna,
Quite a collection of tunes there a whopping 22GB. Let me answer your questions in the order they appear.

1. No Bluetooth is not a good idea. The transfer speeds as I remember are a maximum of 1mb/sec (that is being optimistic). Bluetooth is OK for syncing + the odd file transfer in your case low resolution photos from mobile phones. Large files are painfully slow and certainly not the amount you are expecting to backup.

2. I have chosen the external hard drive solution as there are huge external drives available from the likes of Lacie/Maxtor. I have the firewire version which are quick. I personally prefer this as you can store a lot more than just music, you can even backup your whole computer. They are not very expensive if you shop around.

3. Other options are if you have a superdrive equipped mac is to network them and transfer files across via either ethernet which is pretty fast or WiFi which is slightly slower and then burn them on DVD.

4. A data CD has the files in their original format i.e in case of itunes it is either AAC or mp3. These files are much smaller appx 4MB/song. Whereas if you make an audio CD the format is different for it to play in ordinary household CD players. You can experiment it - an audio CD holds appx 15 song whereas a Data CD can hold upto 700MB of 4MB/song you do the math.

5. If you are backing up Data CD is the way to go. The files can be easily imported at a later date if something goes wrong.

6. As for Apple installing superdrives I doubt it as I have not seen any of this advertised but I suggest you try some private Apple specialist, but my suggestion would be its not worth it and I would go with an external drive which can be used with other computers in the future.

Let us know if you need any further clarifications.

Imran
