itunes 64 bit version srtill shows *32 in Win7 64bit

The iTunes application is still only 32bit.
The 64bit installer simply contains 64bit drivers.

🙂 Chris has you pretty much covered here. The vast bulk of iTunes is still 64-bit.

The current state of play is that in the 64-bit installer bundle (for iTunes 9.0.2.25), Apple Mobile Device Support is completely 64-bit. Some of the BonJour componentry is 64-bit (there's a 64-bit version of at least one of the dlls, I think). The iTunes miniplayer (the thing that lives in the TaskBar) is 64-bit, and the iPod Service Module has now gone 64-bit.

QuickTime, Apple Application Support and Apple Software Update are all completely 32-bit. Bonjour and iTunes are almost-all/mostly 32-bit.

Checking in my process tab, the Apple Mobile Device Service is also showing *32

Interesting. Shows as 64-bit on our Vista Ultimate 64-bit box.

Which version of iTunes do you currently have installed? The change from 32-bit to 64-bit happened sometime between a version 8.x and 9.0.2.25, but I'm not sure precisely when. (That PC was upgraded from an 8 of some description directly to a 9.0.2.25.)

However, I'm not sure if this is just because my itunes was upgraded on that day?

Interesting. We can doublecheck the version number in iTunes. In iTunes, go "Help > About iTunes" and wait for the version number to scroll up from the bottom of the page. What do you see appear for you?

Was the 64 bit version out on the day win7 came out?

A quick search through Wikipedia (I couldn't remember off the top of my head) says that it came out one week later ... Windows 7 on 22 October and iTunes 9.0.2.25 on 29 October.

The iTunes 9.0.2.25 installer bundle was updated a bit later on, to include QuickTime version 7.6.5 (up from 7.6.4) and Apple Application Support version 1.1.0 (up from 1.0.1). But I don't think the iTunes application itself got updated then ... it would seem odd to have an update for the application with no change in the version number of any description.

Hmmmm. Perhaps we should have a quick look at the "minimal" iTunes diagnostics on your system. In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics", uncheck all the boxes, and then click "Next". Cut and paste the top part of the results into a reply. For example, on my XP Pro SP3 box (the one I'm posting from), I see:

Old version of QuickTime, but new version of AAS ... still that can be due to a Safari 4.0.4 install. (There's an AAS version 1.1.0 in the Safari installer bundle.)

Otherwise, everything checks out the same as the Vista 64-bit system we have here.

Have a look in your C:\Program files folder. Do you see a BonJour, iPod and iTunes folder? In the Common Files folder, inside the Apple folder, do you see a Mobile Device Support folder?

That checks out. In the iPod folder, you should find the iPodService Module (64-bit) file.

Okay ... let's have a look in *Program Files x86* ... do you still have an iPod folder in there? If so, is the another iPodService module lurking in there?

(That iPod folder and that module disappeared from our Vista box after the 9.0.2.25 update ... now the only one we've got is the 64-bit jobbie in Program files.)
