Time machine backups in 2 locations

Question

Time machine backups in 2 locations

How do I use time machine to automatically backup to 2 different discs? I would like to keep one complete backup at home and one in the office. Any possibility to do this automatically anytime I plug in one of the two different discs?

MacBook Pro 17", 2.8 GHz, 500GB HD, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

no, you'll have to switch the designated TM drive in TM system preferences when you switch drives.

Thanks for the answer. Just for my understanding, why does it not even work when I have 2 identical backup discs with identical names?

because the backup disk is recorded in TM system preferences not only by name but also by its UUID which is a unique disk identifier. it's also recorded by some base-64 code. I'm not sure what exactly is encoded there.

There are hacks floating around to fool Time Machine into doing this (and other tricks), but I strongly advise against it: this is your backup, treat it with respect and use as designed. I just live with the minor hassle of visiting System Prefs when switching volumes.
