How to setup VPN connection over PPTP

Hi there!

My Cables company provides me Internet via a VPN connection over PPTP. And my ISP allows only one connection to the VPN. Currently I'm using my Time Capsule (MB764LL/A) as a hard drive only solution. And I have another ASUS base station which is used as a VPN dialer. But I want to use my Time Capsule as a Base Station instead.

I found no PPTP option in "Connection Type" select in AirPort Utility Settings (only Ethernet and PPPoE are available). Though PPTP support is declared in Time Capsule Technical Specifications. And I found someone's 5 years old topic on this forum where the same problem was described ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1118306). The answer was that Airport Express does not support this connection type.

So I'm wondering now if it is still not fixed and I wasted my money too?
Is it possible to configure Time Capsule to be a VPN dialer?

limorenko, Welcome to the discussion area!

None of Apple's base stations will act as a PPTP end point. Sorry for the confusion but the PPTP support mentioned in the documentation refers to the fact that the Time Capsule will allow a PPTP connection through it to a client acting as a PPTP end point.

PPTP connections through the Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS), or AirPort Express (AX) should work. But those devices can not be used as an endpoint.

Same with my internet provider - and it's the same with most internet providers here (in Israel). If you have to connect with a "dialer" through a VPN connection over PPTP/L2TP, the only way you can do it is to set up a wireless network with your time capsule, such that it connects via Ethernet using DHCP. Then, you connect from your Mac to the wireless network you created, and you have to then dial the VPN connection from your Mac (using the built-in client).

I just recently discovered, however, that the Israeli internet providers will allow you to connect directly, without a dialer and VPN connection, if you just ask them to. If your internet provider will also allow you to do this, you'll then be able to set up your time capsule to connect you directly to the internet without creating a VPN connection...
