1gb RAM chips in 867mhz 12in PBG4

Hi,

I have trawled the net to find out if the 867Mhz 12in PowerBook G4 can take 1gb chips and have not found a definitive answer. Some say no - the 867 cant address 1gb of ram, some say yes - no problem just buy PC2700 1gb and it works fine.

Has anybody here actually put a 1gb ram chip into an 867 12in PBG4?

Thx

Dom

Yes. Admittedly not on mine (yet) but on clients 12" 867MHz PowerBooks without any issues.

Who says no? What do they base that conclusion on?

As a point of interest Apple (indeed any computer manufacturer) can only specify max memory specs with memory that is only publicly available at the time of release.

When the 12" 867MHz PowerBook was introduced the largest notebook module available weighed in at 512MB. Add that to the 128MB built in at the time to the 12" PowerBook and you get 640MB as a max memory.

Since then 1GB modules have been introduce (along with 256MB built in for 12" PowerBooks) and I can assure you they will be recognised and work in any G4 PowerBook (indeed any recent G3/G4 iBook).

Just upgraded with a 1gb ram chip from
http://eshop.macsales.com/
the 867 now recognizes 1.12gb
Tested with Tech tools pro and passed
Tested the computer response times with a great program
called Xbench
http://xbench.com/
runs much faster then with stock Apple 512chip
Replaced the 3 yr old 512k chip with
1GB(1024MB) 200 Pin PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM SO-DIMM 200 Pin Memory Module 128x64 CL 2.5 for all PowerBook G4 'Aluminum' 12", 15" & 17" Models, all iBook G4s, iMac G4 1.0GHz+. Tested & Guaranteed! New, Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty. (OWC2700DDRS1GBA

all the tests proved the obvious increases in speed across the board.
Was reluctant to upgrade to 1gb because all that I read said the 867 12" PB
capped out at 640mb..... NOT TRUE
Also the 867 calls for a pc2100 DDRS 266MHZ
The 2700 333mhz runs great.

Hi JFCA,

The answer is yes...and no. The 867 G4 uses PC2100 ram, whereas the 1.33ghz G4 uses PC3100 ram. So they're different. However, ram SHOULD be backwards compatible...so your friends 256 stick SHOULD work in your PB. Make sure you run some good hardware diagnostic software on your Mac after installing it to make sure the Mac likes it (presuming it starts up of course - which it wont if it completely rejects it).

Good luck,

DS

Doug Weiss and Red Dwarf are absolutely correct in every detail.

I just received and installed my Samsung 1GB RAM from OWC and it works perfectly. I no longer have to be concerned that my original maxed-out 640MB (version A) would limit my use of Photoshop Elements or a really stable Tiger 10.4.3, or .4....., which eats memory.

By very carefully removing/inserting the RAM chips to avoid static electricity and placing the very small cover screws back into their original holes, everything went smoothly. Both the fixed 128 MB chip and the removable 512 MB chip were Samsung products, therefor the Samsung 1GB did NOT present any conflict design problem.

Thanks to members of this thread and other RAM postings, I learned and acted upon the derived information to update my 12" ALPB to a level that was not deemed possible by various well meaning "experts".
