Propellerhead's Reason 4 with Logic Express 8

Hi, I cannot figure out how to open Propellerhead Reason 4 inside Logic Express 8. I need the instruments with Reason, so I can record in Logic Express 8. Reason works fine as a standalone, and I have been using Logic Express 8 since it came out. Thanks

Here is a quick guide how to use Reason in ReWire mode in Logic.

Start Logic first and only after it boots start Reason (otherwise ReWire mode won't work).

In Logic, load up a project or create a new one. Go to Mixer -> Options -> Create New Auxiliary Channel Strips. This creates a new Aux channel in mixer. Go to its input slot and select Reason - > RW:MixL/R. Adjust the Aux channel volume so you can hear what's being played back.

Open up the project in Reason.

At this point you should be able to hear Reason input through Aux channel in Logic when you start playback.

With a bit of additional messing around in Logic's Environment, you can use Reason as an virtual external sound module. For that you have to create a ReWire object (or a number of objects, each representing different devices in Reason). To configure any object in Environment you have to click on it and select necessary options on the left side of the Environment window. You should also cable ReWire object(s) to Physical Input Device, so that note information reaches Reason devices.

After that is done, create External MIDI track(s) to record MIDI parts for your ReWire sound module.

You can also use Logic's effects on Reason's instruments used as sound modules in Logic (see above). For that you have to connect instruments in Reason directly to Hardware Interface (for that press Tab, Reason's GUI swaps to cable/connections mode where you can make all necessary adjustments). When it is done (note what instrument goes to which output), go to Logic and create as many Aux channel strips as there are instruments in Reason that you want to use. Assign Aux channels to individual ReWire outputs: click-hold Aux's Input slot and select Reason -> RW:Cha3/4 or RW:Cha7/8, as an example (it depends what hardware interface channels you assigned Reason's devices to).

After that is all done, just click on insert slot of Aux channel and select an effect plugin you want to use.
