Stopping nbns name query broadcasts???

Hello everyone, my macbook is sending several nbns name query packets to a broadcast address whenever I connect to a network. I've been trying to figure out what is sending them with no success. I reinstalled my OS and it still seems to be doing it. My girlfriends macbook does it also. I've tried a few other forums and got one reply "sounds like malware". I called apple and their advice was to clear the WINS tab in under advanced in the network settings(which are clear besides the name which is different from the ones being broadcasted) and to come here. Any help would be very much appreciated.
