Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass screen.

I have a 21.5 iMac bought in November 2009.

There appears to be numerous greyish smudge marks behind the glass screen on the top left hand corner.

It was not apparent to me at first, but after I started using OMMWriter it became easily visible. I also tried placing a neutral white background like TextEdit and it was easily visible even then.

I have cleaned the screen on numerous occasions and it has not had any effect.

What should I do?

These spots are quite disturbing.

Thank you all so very much for posting these issues. I had a refurb in my cart ready to buy when I decided to venture into the forums for any last minute opinions. This has prevented me from purchasing an Apple computer until this is addressed. If anyone from Apple is reading this, it is obviously not an isolated incident and NEEDS to be addressed! I want to own a Mac!!!!

But Mac mini has nothing to do with an Imac, it's much less powerfull, even with all options... The only "Apple's alternative", in terms of power, is, in my opinion, the Mac Pro but it's too expensive for a "similar" configuration (I mean core i7, 16Gb memory, etc...) ...

And seeing what's happening with Imacs, seeing that the problem isn't fixed and isn't recognized officialy by Apple who dares to pay so much money in a Mac Pro ? Maybe Mac Pro has some issues too that won't ever be fixed by Apple... Who knows ? Now, the doubt is here.

Personaly, I would look twice before putting so much money in Apple's products now

Thanks Everyone for your feedback here !

I was very close to make one of my tech dreams come true and buy my first iMac today !! But, after reading about this design flaw (that causes smudges in the screen), I gave up and will not buy this machine until Apple fixes the problem once and for all !

For Apple: I was going to buy your iMac 27, which costs about US$ 3.800 here in Brazil !! But I gave up based on these feedbacks here. I don't want a computer that will soon develop smudges in the screen. So you lost my money !!

I think it's bad that you're trying to pull people from this forum to your own.

This is really the proper place to have this discussion and telling people there is no solution is not a good tactic either. They DO have options.

Many people have received help from apple and many screens have been replaced under apple care.

Other's of us have taken it upon ourselves to clean our screens difficult though it may be.

It is not the only thing you can do. and aggrevating apple by advertising your own web site on theirs is not the way to get their attention.

Not to mention it's not very helpful for people to just be told there is not solution!@

The dust is not just from being a smoker. That just makes matters worse.

The air we breath is much more dirty than any of us would like to imagine and static electricity attracts it.

Computers are notoriously dirty in general for this reason.

Go to apple and try to get your screen replaced on apple care.

If you can't or your apple care is denied then you'll have to clean it on your own.

There are instructions from people like myself who have done it.

After you clean it do not seal it up tight. leave it open so that the smudges don't focus on just one area.

take the tape off the edges of the internal screen.

Watch for heat changes. It is not your fan that is the problem it is the expansion and contraction of air as the screen heats and cools that ***** the dust into the interior portion of your display.

Is it a design flaw? I think so. but it does not damage the screen it just makes it ugly and your computer will continue to work fine. If you do decide to attempt to clean the screen you must be VERY VERY careful. They are easy to break. I have damaged 2 of my 4 that I have tried to clean.

Best solution?

Buy a used mac pro!!!!

They'll last forever don't have the screen problems.

I just got my second 8 core 2.8 GHZ for 1300 plus a 23 inch monitor for 400 and I'm still cheaper than an IMAC and have 10 times the machine for the money!!!

I love APPLE!!!

Please please please can people STOP going on about taking the bloody machine apart and cleaning the thing?? This should NOT be happening to a presigious high end machine that most of us have paid a great deal of money for. The fact that it is happening to quite a number of owners indicates a serious design oversight on the part of Apple and they should be recognising that fact by recalling the offending machines and giving loyal customers some recompense. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple's products, I own many of them myself. But this has gone on far too long with no apparent action. I applaud those on the forum attempting to bring this to a wider audience, because it seems that this is the only way to get some satisfaction.

Please Apple. Do the right thing.

I am a 100% with your comment here. It is just time that Apple is taking us seriously with this issue. It is really very disturbing being told that this an evironmental thing. My Apple support contact in the Netjherlands gave the impression that he felt very uncomfortable with this situation and recommended me to keep a look at the support site. They must know that this is an engineering problem. i hope that our loyalty towards Apple will be justified in short time.
