Q: Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass screen.

I have a 21.5 iMac bought in November 2009.

There appears to be numerous greyish smudge marks behind the glass screen on the top left hand corner.

It was not apparent to me at first, but after I started using OMMWriter it became easily visible. I also tried placing a neutral white background like TextEdit and it was easily visible even then.

I have cleaned the screen on numerous occasions and it has not had any effect.

What should I do?

These spots are quite disturbing.

    It happens after 8 months or so. Apple runs the warranty service down and when the machine fails their response is to redo the same failed repeat replacement. Good luck to you I do hope the replacement works. I am going to dump this lemon.

    So 30 years later after Jobs had said that the intent of Apple was to create personal computers that are made and best serviced by Apple completely to ensure that the consumer gets the best experience, Apple responds to categorically state that they have no intent or repairing the defect that constantly has occured from the date of purchase till present. Also despite their tier 2 tech having promised a replacement despite the duration that promise has been revoked.

     

    Apple can change their minds but they should return the extended warranty payment and the inherent value of the warranty within this iMac if they had no intent of providing a working part. And why provide replacements at some times and not others for out of warranty. Or how about this make a all in personal computer that has a real likelihood of more than 6 months before display failure. Dont beta test on the unsuspecting!

    So I'm curious now as I have had a few iMac's with these screen smudge issues, all were replaced, then I eventually graduated to a Mac Pro tower and seperate cinema display, that also had the smudge issues appear and the unit was serviced, twice.

     

    Does this issue also appear with the newer Thunderbolt displays? I'm wondering if Apple had changed the configuration of the fans inside the unit, possibly making it a sealed unit now to prevent dust getting inside the LCD screen. Does anyone have a seperate Thunderbolt display and has it exhibited signs of smudges?

     

    Sadly I use my Macbook Pro more now than I use my Mac Pro tower and monitor for fear of the monitor acting up again and it's now off applecare in a few days.

    I have had a thuderbolt display for 2 years. Just got nasty clouding in the center of my screen today. Fixed it in just a few minutes by removing outer screen and wiping off inside. Didn't need suction cups, I was able to pry cover off using a fingernail to the side of the screen!

    Seems its a common problem and atleast fixable without replacing the screen if out of warranty.

    I have a mid 2011 thunderbolt display.  I too suffered from the dark cloudy burn in.  Luckily I have Apple care.  I took my 27" iMac into Apple, and a genious techican stated immediately that I needed a new LCD.  A 600 dollar repair, covered by Apple care.

     

    Now my concern is that this issue did not evolve for some 10 months after initial purchase.  I do hope I do not suffer the same issues in the future.

    That video is appropriate but not entirely practical without the time.

     

    Apple with billions in their bank making millions in interest can spend more for foil tape and take a 30 cents hit in profit. The video shows the inherent flaw which is designed in Calfornia and clearly examples around the world.

    I did it two times with mine. 27" iMac about 4 and a half years old.

     

    I got gray smudge like water stains. (it move over time from the right side of the screen into the middle right area.)

     

    Cleaned it first I was extremely cautious it took me 4 hours to take apart the LCD unit. It was NOT easy. Next day I had a terrible muscle pain in my back :-)

     

    Cleaned it (there was not much dirt inside), retaped it put it back and after some minutes the problem is the same. I figured that I only cleaned it dry so I took it apart again and now cleaned it with window cleaner.

     

    Assembled it again after some minutes of heating up the problem is the same!!!!  .. Than I cried a little and thought I just have to live with it. (I asked Apple but they don't replace the LCD because the iMac is over 3 years)

     

    After two weeks my HD just died in about two days time. I took out the HD and put a SSD in to the place of the DVD drive (I bought a holding tray from E-Bay).

     

    Whoala all the strong water stain type of smudge just DISAPPEARED!!! Totally gone. I did not believe my eyes.

     

    Probably my dying HD heated up and that caused the problem. I got a new HD (same type Seagate 1Tb) in it's place and NO problem since...

     

     

    So certain problems can be HEAT related, there is just too much stuff inside the iMac.

     

    Just my 2 cents...

    I too have had issues with grey smudge marks on my iMac 27" Mid 2011 which was purchased on November 2011.  I work in the IT field already and I am a die hard Mac user/fan.  I know that an LCD screen should ultimately last a lifetime if used properly.  Hardware failure is expected so I would think that would come before my LCD went bad which put a bad taste in my mouth.  I did a lot of research, reading everything on this issue from this forum and many others.  Since my iMac is out of warranty I knew that going to get it fixed may be difficult.  While researching I did find that they did a recall on a graphics card on the iMacs.  I looked mine up and I too had the graphics card they were recalling, however I never experienced any issues with the graphics card.  I did document that so I could bring that up if I had to.  With this in mind, I bookmarked all of the success stories others have had with the Genius Bar at Apple.  I made sure to save pages that told the story of the "Quality Program" that they secretly have.  I also made sure to keep documentation of this 80+ page forum to show that it's an issue.  I went ahead and documented all of my Apple purchases, orders I have placed thru Apple at my workplace, and the people I have converted from PC to Mac.  I wanted them to know how I am a loyal customer and if they would happen to handle this situation in the wrong way, I was able to impact their sales (slightly I know but I still would have an impact).  In conclusion to my preparation, I wanted to be prepared to fight this issue with them if they gave me problems when I showed them my grey smudges.  I had to drive 2 hours to the store, so I had in the back of my mind that I was not coming home unless this issue was handled correctly.

     

    So what was the outcome?

     

    I made my appointment for 12:30 PM today.  I showed up early to scout out my parking in comparison to where the store was.  Once I realized where I was, I went back out and brought my iMac (in original box and packaging) into the store.  Yes it was a forearm burner.  I checkd myself in 15 minutes early and they proudly told me that they have been very busy, but they are on time so it won't be long until I get to meet with one of the Genius Bar members.  After a short wait, I was called to the Genius Bar. 

     

    The Genius asked me what my issue was and I politely said that I am experiencing grey smudges all over my screen.  Once I got it unpacked and placed in position he asked well I don't see any.  I said, "Well we have to turn it on."  Once it powered on to the white boot screen you could already see the smudges all over!  If I recall, I don't even think he said anything, but I could see it in his eyes that he was aware of this issue.  He didn't even say anything.  He ran a few tests from their servers to make sure the iMac was running as it should and it passed every single test.  He still remained silent.  After doing some things on his iPad he asked me for information and asked if he had the correct information.  After all of that he said well this is what we can do, and he went on to explain that they will replace the screen ONCE for this issue.  I asked him if he had seen this before and he nodded yes.  He did not explain much of the issue tho.  The only thing he told me was that it is known to be an environmental issue.  I asked him to explain and he went on with "things that could cause this are: burning candles, smoke, dust, etc..."  I said "Candles???"  And he said yes.  I explained that I never had any candles burning near my computer, it's not dusty, but I have ready that it was some sort of LCD contamination.  He said that's exactly what it was.  I asked what I can do to prevent this since I have not had any of the above that could affect my lcd.  He simply said "Just keep doing what your doing then." 

     

    That answer did not set welll with me because, he is basically saying, its going to happen again and again.  I did not ask anyting else becuase he is fixing my iMac that is over 2 years old out of warranty and with NO APPLE CARE.  Yes I am very pleased with how it was handled.  I am glad I did not have to make a fool of myself and get nasty with all of the research I did, but I still feel uneasy about how he basically told me it cannot be prevented. 

     

    In conclusion, I was able to get my 2+ year old iMac MID 2011 fixed out of warranty and with no apple care.  He said the part will be in in a few days and I can come get it free of charge.  I will udpate you all on the issue if anything goes wrong, but I will also try to attach my work order that shows it was fixed under the "Warranty Status of Quality Program".

    just currios, have you've ever had your imacs box opened and cleaned.  I hear lots of people say they live in a dust free enviroment, but we all say that to the point our mothers come visit or we open our electronic divices and blow a pile of dust off our fans. 

     

    i find all this interesting as I live in the desert southwest and my grey smuges turned out to be humidity after the leaving the computer off for several days durring a rainy spell.  prior to the smuges evaporating i read about the dust and had my unit opened and cleaned.  just saying, try and keep your units and clean and dry like the operating specification suggest.

    I had the same experience as you. Called Cuepertino and politley but firmly let them know the screen stain was unacceptable, even though my iMac was out of warranty.

     

    To their credit, they did replace the screen. To their detriment, the replacement screen got a stain as well. This one takes up about 2/3 of the LCD. The only bright side is that is fades a bit after the iMac has been running. If you don't know it's there, it sometimes is hard to spot. ****, I know it's there and I sometime can't see it.

     

    Thing is, that is totally unacceptable. Apple has been marketing itself for 30 years as the best and brightest in home computing, and charging a premium while they're at it. Their top-of-the-line consumer computer's LCD should not be this defective after barely a year in service.

     

    Best of luck to you. Unfortnuately, my experience and most others on this thread indicates you will get the staining back. Not "if", but "when".

    Yes I am aware that it is going to be the "when" factor.  I am not sure how wI am going to handle this.  I have contimplated selling the unit after getting it fixed and eventually purchasing a Mac Pro and using my own display.  Pricey but may be my best best.

     

    The other thought that has crossed my mind is swapping my HDD with a SSD.  Possibly removing heat from the unit itself I am hoping can help prolong this.  I am also guilty of leaving it on for long periods of time.  That is something that I take into consideration and will try to be better about.  I am also going to try covering the iMac with some sort of fitted sheet to help block out access to particles when I am not using it.  Yes these things should not need to be done to keep the unit working like it should, but since I have made the initial investment of the iMac itself, I am going to try and keep better care of it so I don't lose out too much!

     

    During my research I have read many success stories of them even giving out new iMacs for this issue.  I guess it's all about timing.  If the part is on back order or they have a long wait period it may result it them offering a new unit.  I am going to hope while it is in for repairs, that something like this takes place so I can come out on top.  Wishful thinking, I know, but I am just happy that I am getting it fixed.  I'll be happy either way, but I will obviously feel way better if I get that call to come and get a new one!

    Apple Exec flatly refused to repair a known issue on my LCD panel. Yours was a goodwill but the next one will be refused since they did the one repair aready. IMHO worth getting rid off the iMac now while it works.

    I have same issue with my iMac 27" late 2012 Ivy bridge model.

    I got two smuge marks bottom left corner and right. I believe this is manufacturing problem.

    It seems DIY cleaning is impossible for this skinny iMac.
