Q: I get "error code 0x80020022" when I try to write to disc.

"The disk can't be burned because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."

This just started. I can't burn to any disc.
I reset my computer every way I know how.
I did disc repair by booting from my restore disc. etc.
I'm using good quality discs that I've used many times before.
I can still watch DVDs and listen to CDs.

Any help please.

I don't have a solution but I have gathered that the problem is due to bigger file size especially anything over 4GB. Are the files you are trying to copy more than 4 GB?

    No that is not the problem. So far I haven't seen anyone suggest a plausible explanation for this. I'm going with the simplest explanation;

The drives or associated hardware/software are defective.

I'll be on the phone to Applecare (yet again) when I get a chance.

This is darn right frustrating! Apple NEEDS to acknowledge this problem and fix it. I have a MacBook MB466 running OS 10.5.8. I get this error when I use my internal SuperDrive OR an external Samsung burner. I've tried several different data sources to copy and the copy always gets to the 43% complete and then gives me the communication error.

I'm getting TIRED of throwing away $1.00 disc every time I try to make a copy.

Does anyone have any news from AppleCare? Please post.

No one's going to want to hear this, but this problem goes back at least two and perhaps three years. It plagued my G4 Powerbook and my Macbook White. Now it's happening with my Macbook Pro.

Apple has been scandalously lax about this issue which affects a major feature of the machine, the ability to burn DVDs. It's an embarrassment and s real bad mark against Apple that not only have they not solved the problem, they haven't even acknowledged it. Talk about ignoring your customers...!

I have just purchased and installed Snow Lepeord after reading a previous post that said by doing so helped and they found no problems burning CD's. DONT do this, it does not work, I still have the same issue with burning any CD's whether its file data or iTunes purchases - I still get the error code 0x80020022.

This is very frustrating and Apple should get their heads out of the sand and deal with it.

The problem for most users hasn't been burning CDs, it's burning DVDs. Though some users may be having problems with CDs, too. Yeah, this is about as big a faux pas as you can imagine.

Note that no one from Apple has chimed in yet despite this item having been online for many, many days.

And no one from Apple will, as this is a user-to-user discussion board with no official support from Apple.

Our Mac Mini gives me the same error code when trying to burn DVDs. A Google search brought me to the conclusion of a failing drive that needs to be replaced.

(Not so. Apple staff regularly peruse these forums and have, in the past, left ideas and suggestions. They don't necessarily do so speaking for Apple, although that has happened also.)

The only staff around here are the moderators, and a small handful of employees who choose to participate in their spare time. The employees aren't here in any official capacity.

If you're looking for an answer from Apple, you need to call Apple support.

Having purchased to MacBooks together, one has this problem recently as posted. Dissapointing that nobody from Apple has stepped forward to answer this post.

Consider this, without the purchasing power from genuine people who truly love Apple there would not have been the rapid growth from revenue which we have seen over the last decade. When individuals post a comment like this which seems a common issue, think about posting a solution. It would be good for your brand values and reputation or is it all just about profit?

I'm really looking forward to see if someone from Apple steps forward...

I'm in contact with a higher level person at Applecare and we're trying to dope it out.

In the meantime, I went out and bought some 4.7 GB Verbatim DVD blanks. Wouldn't you know it, they worked! This was using my MacBook White's Hitachi Superdrive. I haven't tried it yet on my MB Pro's Matshita Superdrive.

My hypothetical conclusion is that Memorex 8.5 GB blanks are made with tolerances that are too fine for the Superdrives and they are causing the problem, at least for me.

The senior Applecare tech I spoke with, Britt, said that the problem was known to Apple's engineers and they were working on it. When I suggested that a problem written about in the Forums in 2005 was perhaps overdue for a solution, she just repeated what she had already told me. She asked if I could go out and buy some different brands of discs and try them out, create a new account and try it out, and generally do the Edison thing of a thousand novel tests. At that point I just gave up. I did do one experiment using Verbatim instead of Memorex (which is not the Memorex we remember from our youth, an audio company in Mountain View, but rather an overseas firm that bought the name but not the quality control) and discovered that I could burn smaller DVDs (4.7 GB) although not movie-length, which was reassuring a little.

My feeling was that this is Apple's problem and they should be buying all the discs and trying them out, and messing with their software, and seeing what works and what doesn't. How many billions in profits did Apple make last quarter? How many more millions of Macs did they sell? Why the **** then should we the customers be doing their usability and QA testing for them? I used to be an Apple partisan; now I'm just a participant. Give me a fit alternative and I might very well be a poor sport and leave for it. We, the customers who make Apple rich, deserve better treatment. No fault of Britt's, she was just trying to make sense of a crazy situation.
