configuring Time Capsule's sleep mode

Hi everyone,

I have a time capsule 1T, which I use to back up my files and also as an external hard drive for my music and photos. The problem is that it often goes to sleep during a slide presentation of my photos, or after it played a song of more than 5 minutes... It would be nice to configure it to go to sleep only after 30 minutes or so... Does anyone know if it is possible to set when the time capsule should go to sleep?

Thanks!

Same problem here!

In the TC configure software there is no option to configure the sleep mode.

I searched everywhere on the internet for a solution... No luck!

I have software which automatically completes tasks for my business. Every morning I get an error because it cannot reach the TC within a certain amount of time.

Please help!

Hi again,

I have a time capsule 1T, which I use to back up my business files and also as an external hard drive for my data. The problem is that it goes to sleep. Same problem here!

My MacBook is connected to the TC by WiFi but I have the same problem with a Windows 7 computer with LAN connection.

In the TC configure software there is not an option to configure the sleep mode.

I have searched everywhere on the internet for a solution... No luck! I found a lot of complains about this problem but no solution.

I have software which automatically completes tasks for my business. Every morning I get an error because it cannot reach the TC within a certain amount of time and therefore cannot save the files because the TC looks down.

I called Apple. They advised me to put de guest account on the TC on for read and write. They said it would be faster to reach the HD afterwards, because the HD stays more busy that way. I tried that but there is not much difference.

I know I can put an USB external HD on my Macbook but that way I have to leave my MacBook powered on. And than I am stuck with a time capsule which I bought for nothing! What a waist of money.

*I hope someone from Apple is reading this and comes up with a solution!* I think the solution would probably be a firmware update...

Please help!
Thanks!

Tjaka,

I have an idea, but it is by far no solution. However, it should help you out every morning with your particular problem. Use your business software to run a simple task like copying a small file to the TC. It does not matter if the task fails or not. Then, one minute later, have the real task launch after the TC has woken up from the previous task.

If you understand what I’m proposing, you should be able to play around with the task and timing to get the TC to wake up for the real task. This should help until a real solution is found.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tjaka
Did you solve the problem
I didn't understand the Xander's tip. What's about? you have to create a task with automator?

I am worry about this sleep problem cause I want to buy a TC to share my photo, music, movies and tv shows to a mac mini (through LAN) which is attached to my plasma tv in the living room.
Could you explain better this sleep problem?

If I will watch a movie that is in the TC's drive It will go to sleep????
I read the first post of this thread and that user said that TC went to sleep also when He was watching to his photo's slide...
How is it possible?
TC goes to sleep also when the drive is used???????

Riki,
Tjaka is using business software to automate a task that wants to access the TC’s drive. Since TC goes to sleep and the drive is not available, I proposed a workaround.

The TC will wake up if you try to access it. However, there is a small delay before the TC’s drive spins up to proper operating speed and is ready for use. This delay is making Tjaka’s business task fail because the software failed to access the drive within a given period of time.

My proposition for Tjaka was to create another business task that wants to access the TC’s drive. This new task will fail in accessing the drive, but will succeed in waking up the TC’s drive. Essentially, this new task will wake up the TC’s drive like an alarm clock. Then, the real business task will launch and be successful in accessing the TC’s drive.

This theory should work with automator as a way to wake up the TC’s drive. I will do some testing this weekend with regard to keeping the TC’s drive from going to sleep.

I sure do with we weren’t having this discussion.

my TC sleeps after a few minutes of inactivity and takes about 10-12 seconds to spin up and be available for use. i am accessing files on the TC all day, but many times after it sleeps. i'm waiting the 10-12 seconds literally 30+ times per day. this is rather annoying and unproductive. when i called apple, they said this is normal operation. i have sent feedback to apple. hopefully they will allow the user to set the sleep mode parameters. hopefully. soon. i may take it back otherwise.
