Help needed in connecting two midi keyboards to Logic Pro.

Hey there, I would like to connect two midi keyboards to Logic Pro and enable each keyboard to trigger separate software instruments each. For example, one keyboard has guitar and the other has strings.

I realise this must have something to do with midi channels or ports, however my knowledge is limited.
At current, I just have the two keyboards connected via usb straight to the computer. Is it possible I need a multi input or output interface, so that Logic can recognise different ports, or channels? Perhaps there is simply something I need to do in Logic itself? the keyboards are basic M-Audio midi controllers, just a usb port - thats it, no other connections. Any help would be great, Brad.

Hi keys,
Welcome to the forum!
I believe you could try this:
instead of your keyboards send to all channels, select one to send on say
midi 1 (only) and the other keyboard to send on channel 2 (only),
in logic open two software tracks one receiving on channel 1 and the other yeah (2),
by default in logic are set to all (you'll find the midi channel on left, on top of channel strip,
just bellow the inst. icon)
Hope this solve your problem (in theory this must work).
As for the keys read on they manual how to make them transmit on one channel or change that in Enigma (m-audio editor) if it's the case.
Sorry, I couldn´t test it as I'm not near my system now.
Give some input then.
Cheers,
Jorge

Hi Jorge, thx for ur reply. I tried changing the midi channels of the two software instruments in logic, but still get the same sound out of both keyboards, depending on which software instrument I have selected. I am guessing that I need to set the physical keyboard inputs to different midi channels? I'm not sure how to do this, as the keyboards themselves have no way of changing the channels on them (just plain midi controllers). In audio/midi setup in 'utilities' on mac osx, I can change the channels for the keyboards, but this still doesn't make a difference in logic. Logic and mac automatically identify with these keyboards and there is no need for drivers. However, in the environment window of logic, under midi instruments, the keyboards don't show up. Could this be part of the problem? I would like to know how to assign 'logic control' to these keyboards and play a different software instrument on each at the same time. I hope this sheds more light on the situation. Thx, Brad.

Hey Brad,

yes you need also to change the out midi of the keyboards.
in my case I have the Keysation 61 es, it's done this way:

"Channel
MIDI data from the keyboard can be sent on any of 16 MIDI Channels. However, certain MIDI devices and MIDI software applications require
the keyboard to send data on a specified channel. If this is the case, you can change the channel the data is sent using the following
method:
< Press the Advanced Functions button to engage Edit Mode.
< Press one of the 16 Channel keys from D1 to E3, according to the Channel that you need.
For example, if a device specifies that you need to send data on Channel 10, press the Advanced Functions button, and then key F2 to select
Channel 10.
The Channel can also be assigned to the Octave “+” and “-” buttons. Once assigned, pressing “+” or “-” will increase or decrease the channel
incrementally. When Channel 16 is reached and “+” is pressed, Channel 1 will be selected. If the Octave “+” and “-” keys are selected to vary
the Channel, the lights above the buttons will not change, since it is not possible to have a Channel with a negative value. Pressing both the
“+” and “-” buttons together will recall Channel 1."

Can you please tell me what keyboards do you have?
this is for two players having a go on completely 2 different parts.

In case you want to record 2 tracks with the same content say a piano and a pad,
all you need to do is open the tracks and rec enable both and you have piano pad.

Anyway I believe you need to have two separate sounds for two players?
Give us some more input of what you want, there must have one or more solutions to what you need.
Cheers mate,

Jorge

I have two M-Audio KeyRig 49 keyboards. I don't want to use recording at the moment, just two keyboards for live playing with a different sound on each. I tried selecting edit mode on the keyboards then d1 for midi channel one, then e1 on the second keyboard for midi channel two, then respectively on the software instruments in logic, but still same sound on keyboards.

Hey Immo, I just had to change my screen name! Further to ur brilliant help, can I at all play multiple sounds on each keyboard n auto-demix or only one sound per channel, meaning two if their is two keyboards.

I'm asking because, I followed the instructions and they worked, but can only play one software instrument on one software instrument at a time. I would like to play eg; piano and strings on one keyboard and guitar and flute on the other keyboard. I tried doing this with assigning two instruments to one channel, then the other two to another channel, but only one sounds on each keyboard. With auto-demix off, I can play several sounds on one keyboard through one channel.

Hope this makes sense.

Brad.

Hi Brad,

The only thing i can think of at the moment that would make it possible is to create a layered Instrument combining the two instruments in one.

A simple tutorial on how to do the 1st part can be found [Here|http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/production/how-to-create-a-multi-inst rument-in-logics-environment>

To create layers you'll need to add transformers to set the key -range for each instrument you'd like to include.

I can not recreate that right now( as I have to go) to give you exact instructions... if nobody has offered a better option till I'm back later on this evening I post it for you.
