Is it possible for Logic to record a wet track made in Mainstage?

Hi!

I just learned how to record both a wet and a dry track in Logic using a buss. The same trick does not work between Mainstage and Logic. Is there any way to record the sound coming out of Mainstage on a track in Logic (without using a mic... 😉.

Thanks

I am always dismayed when I see the ubiquitous "why bother" response, which I see quite often on the software development forums as well.

If people only ever used tools for their originally intended use, there would be very little progress in the world.

I can easily imagine how, after configuring a patch and just playing around, one might come up with a musically interesting riff or an interesting sound effect that one might want to immediately capture for later use or experimentation. Indeed, BECAUSE MainStage is designed for live performance, it lets you do some things quite easily that are much more awkward to setup in Logic without a lot of effort and preparation (for example, splits and layering and using multiple keyboards simultaneously)

It happens to me quite often when I'm practicing on the grand piano, which was also not designed for recording what I'm playing. Fortunately, Don Buchla invented the PianoBar which lets me easily capture what I'm playing into a MIDI recorder.

Similarly, SoundFlower lets people use tools that were not originally designed to work together in the audio world on a Mac. Do you think the PianoBar or SoundFlower should not have been invented?

Sigh

Thanks for all your replies. They are very helpful.

First, let me you why I want to do this. I want to record in a live situation and be able to make a mix out of it. And I'm changing my pedalboard setup maybe three or four times during the one hour set. And pedals go on and off. So if I record dry in Logic, I won't be able to make a mix in five minutes. With the input from Mainstage, I could.

Sure, I could use the Pedalboard in Logic, record it dry and send the processed signal to a bus and to record on another track, but Mainstage is a better visual tool in live situations. Therefore this topic.

Thanks for Soundflower. I tried it. It worked good when used alone, but I think there is some sound degradation when it's part of an aggregated device with an Apogee Duet. I have to make more tests while making the buffer size in Mainstage and Logic. And I'll test it also with the MOTU Traveler. I'll report here the results.

And I'll try also the Recording inside Mainstage. That would be a little more tedious if the Soundflower solution does not work, but still an acceptable one.

Thanks to you all!

Ivan
