iPod Classic internal speaker plays music?

My friend has received an replacement ipod classic from apple and it can play music from an internal speaker when no headphones are plugged in. Why can mine not do this?
(dont say he modded it cause he aint)

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6.1), its awesome!

Hello d3man,

This feature is not available for the iPod classic, so are you entirely positive he has an iPod classic? The 5th generation iPod nano and iPod touch models have this functionality built in. Otherwise, there is no way to make this possible with your iPod classic.

I'm absolutely certain it is an ipod classic as he showed me yesterday.
The sound comes out of the actual ipod but is not very loud.
Ive asked other people and they suggest this a very odd firmware bug, but it would be good to be able to replicate it as it sounds like a alright feature.
