Record a downloaded backing track and a guitar simultaneously

Searched the forum, no good answer.

I have a backing track from my itunes library. I create a new project. Import backing track as a loop. Add real guitar to project. Both are audible and I can play over the track and hear thru headphones. When I click the record buttons to enable both tracks to record I get an error message saying "

"The input channel of this track is already in use. To record on this track, choose another input channel."

What does this mean? I am using an Imic to run guitar into my macbook pro, which has only one audio jack.
Any help would be appreciated, just got the mac and am new to all this

why are you record enabling both tracks? you'd record over (erase) your backing track. just enable the one you on which you plan to record your guitar

"The input channel of this track is already in use. To record on this track, choose another input channel."

your iMic has two channels, those two channels are assigned to both tracks in Track "i"nfo, so only one can be enabled unless you change the assignment in each from stereo to different mono channels

I want to play over the back track and record it.

I may be doing it wrong but if I create a track for my guitar and set up the amp. Then I drag a loop into the track. Now the track is "played" thru the amp and comes out distorted. The other way I tried is to create two tracks one for the loop and one for the guitar.When I do this I get the error message. If there is a proper way to do it I would appreciate any help

you are misunderstanding how multi-track recording works.

drop your pre recorded music on one track, then create another for your guitar and record on THAT track. you don't "record the pre-recorded music," it's already there once you dropped it in.

Also, If I've read between the lines correctly, you're playing an acoustic guitar through a mic. You can put that on a Real Instrument track instead of an Electric Guitar track if you don't want amps and effects to play with.
