Q: Boot Camp Update does not install completely.

Running Boot Camp either natively on my Macbook Pro (XP Home SP3, NTFS) or in Parallels Desktop 4, if I run Apple Software Update in Windows, it tells me that there is a recommended update Boot Camp 2.2.

I reboot into Windows (Boot Camp native) and run Apple Software Update. It downloads 23.8 MB of software, installs it, and asks me to restart, which I do. When I then run Apple Software Update again, it still says that same update is required. This is 100% reproducible.

I checked in Add and Remove Programs. There is just one copy of Apple Software Update and it is version 2.1.1.116 which seems to be the latest. Boot Camp Services shows version 2.1.1. Application Support is version 1.1.0. There are many Apple driver packages, none very new.

It appears that either the update is not really getting installed at all, or the installation process is failing to update the version number. Possibly there is some kind of interaction with Parallels Desktop, but that seems unlikely since all of this is happening when booted natively into Windows XP.

MacBook Pro 13", 4G RAM, 250GB HD, Mac OS X (10.6.2), Parallels 3.0, Final Cut Express HD 3.5, iPhone 3G.

I turned on verbose logging following instructions in a Microsoft KB article, and did eventually get a log generated. Thousands of lines of detailed trace, which I have uploaded as an addendum to the bug report I submitted some time ago to Apple. It all looks fine to me until near the end when it suddenly quits with error code 1603. The real cause may be much higher up buried in the verbose details.

No response yet from Apple to my bug report.

Ack. That's about as generic an error message number as we can get, Al.

How did you submit your bug report? (If you'll excuse the nosy question.) Was it via the product feedback forms or via the Apple Developer connection bug reporter?

ADC bug reporter, incident 7569595. I uploaded the whole verbose log. If you can access it that way, feel free to look for any clues in it. I know very little about the Microsoft installer system, so I don't know what clues to look for in it.

    Al Q,

I did the same thing, re: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300
I am not getting any log files.

Included the exported content of the created Registry key:
    [HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
    "Logging"="voicewarmupx"

Windows Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

Select the first section Application. Chances are that you will see there an Error entry (red icon) with source MsiInstaller and code 1023, and with a time stamp that matches your latest run of the Boot Camp updater. Double click on it and you will see details. It ought to tell you that additional information is available in a log file, which should be the verbose log requested by the registry entry you set up. There is the full pathname there of the log file.

That's how I found my log; for some reason it did not show up when I did a wild card search.

I do not have any Error entry (red icon) with source MsiInstaller in Applications of Event Viewer. I checked all source MsiInstaller entries and none are related to the BCUpdateXP.exe install.

I noticed that the BCUpdateXP.exe system icon displays the WinRar application icon. If I ask WinRar to extract the files of BCUpdateXP.exe it generates 2 files : BCLocUpdateEnable.exe and BCUpdateXP.msp
It wasn't clear to me that BCUpdateXP.exe was not a self runable install app.
    I thought it was.

Then I ran BCUpdateXP.msp by itself.
I got an error dialog with message: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded maybe missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. verify that the program to be upgraded exist on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

I am not sure why I am getting this error since I have BootCamp 2.0.

Because you removed 2.1, I think you are now using the 2.1 installer but I am using 2.2. That could account for the different behaviour. But I strongly suspect that if we solve one of our problems we will end up solving both.

I expect that there is something corrupted in the libraries or registry in both of our systems from previous installations. I was hoping to discover that we had both installed a particular third party program that might be the cause, but so far we have not found one.

Just wanted to say I have the same problem. I keep getting prompted by the Apple Software Update in Windows to update BootCamp to v2.2.
The software gets downloaded and seems to install, but then after restart it's still v2.1.
I tried it in a true native BootCamp session and from inside a virtual machine (I use VMware Fusion). Neither works. This is on a MacBook Pro 5,3.

If you check earlier postings in this thread there are pointers to instructions on finding the Windows event log (which will always be there) and enabling verbose logging in the Windows Installer sessions. If you are getting Error events (I do but some do not) it might be worth turning on verbose logging and capturing the Windows log. I already have a bug report open with Apple, and additional logs from others with the same problem may help to narrow down the cause. The only common thread so far seems to be that everyone posting in this thread has a Macbook Pro.

I have not yet had any communication from Apple on my bug report, so it is not clear that anyone there has started seriously investigating these failures.

I also have been having this problem with native bootcamp on an iMac 20". Any response from Apple about it yet? It would be nice if they would put out a full installer instead of the upgrade. I've tried several times from the Apple Updates and downloading and doing the manual install. Never works.

I have the very same problem with my MacBook Pro. I have Parallels v 5.0.9310 running off the same partition as BootCamp.

Booting natively into WindowsXP (sp3) or Parallels: SWU finds the 2.2 BootCamp update, goes through the motions of installing, but on restart still is at 2.1.

Other software updates install fine, such as the recent Safari update.

I'll look into doing the verbose logging. Where should I send the logs?

Sorry just looked at the way to enable verbose logging and I'm not comfortable making those changes. The MS instructions are not clear enough for me to mess with regedit. Is there another route?

I definitely see the Error code 1603 message in the Event Viewer.

Probably just going to disable this update...

Just adding my name to the list of people experiencing the exact same problem. Apple Update tells me I need to install, I perform the update and it appears to be successful, and next time I run Apple update it tells me I need to do it all over again. Endless loop. I thought maybe it was actually installing and it was just a false warning but when I look at the version I can see it is staying stuck at 2.1.

Nobody had any useful suggestions. but I very recently found another thread where someone had (different) updates failing, and the suggestion was to uninstall any third party video mirror drivers. Certainly not any obvious connection, but when I tried it the updates sailed through with no problems.
