Battery won't stay charged

My phone is less than a year old. Late my phone won't hold a charge very long even though I charge it all night. I might answer 3 or more e-mails and make one phone call and the battery is half gone. The back of the phone is also warm and i noticed if i leave it on my desk next to my land line telephone the land line makes a lot of crackling like my iphone is running all of the time. I cut off bluetooth, wi-fi etc, but nothing seems to help. Has anyone else had these problems and what can be done? Will I have to get new phone or can new battery be put in?

iphone, iPhone OS 3.0

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:

1. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off.
If no change, continue:
2. Restore your phone from a backup, note: if the problem is related to corrupt data stored in your backup, while this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem.
If no change, continue:
3. Restore as a "new" phone in itunes & re-sync your content. All saved data will be lost.
If no change, make an appointment at an Apple store, or call Apple Care if you purchased such.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps such as an iPhone reset, restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup?

If no change after any of these steps, you can call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

If it is determined that your iPhone has a hardware problem, your iPhone remains under warranty and nothing has been done that would void the warranty, your iPhone will be exchanged. Apple offers a battery replacement option if needed for iPhones that are no longer under warranty only.

I am also having the same problem where my iPhone will not stay charged. I have tried everything except restoring the phone back to default settings. That is because I really don't want to lose everything. Does anyone else have any ideas other than restoring the phone? I have done everything else. HELP!!!!

If you have done everything else, there is nothing else for you to try.

If no change after restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, you can always follow this by restoring from your iPhone's backup.

If no change after restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, you can call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby. You can restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup now or later since AppleCare or an Apple store will probably request this be done if you haven't already done so.

I'm having the same trouble, it started about 4 days ago. I thought it might be related to the Push update from FaceBook. I uninstalled the FaceBook App and nothing changed. I have reset and restored. No change. Something is running and eating up the battery. Today in 1 1/2 hours it burned through have the battery just sitting on my desk. I hate to think that I have to do a Restore/New.

You're not the only one with the problem, but out of 60 million phones you are in a minority. It's only been a few minutes since you tried this, so give it an hour to sync up your mail. If it is still discharging heavily try deleting Facebook and rebooting. Also try turning off Notifications (to catch any other apps that could be causing the problem). Any time you make a change to settings you should reboot, because some changes don't take effect until after a reboot.

BTW, I didn't say turn off PUSH, I said turn off the email account that uses Push. There's a big difference.

The next step if all of the above fails is to do a Restore. And if that doesn't fix it do a Restore again and do not reload your backup, so you essentially have a new phone. If you have the problem still you have a hardware problem and Apple should exchange the phone if it is in warranty.

Understood. I removed FaceBook and rebooted. No change. I did turn off all notifications too. And when I did turn off the email that uses push AND turned off push. Rebooted turned everything back on with no difference. I'm getting my emails so everything is working but I'll wait a hour. Then I do a restore with out reloading the back up. (Hate That).

Something is running. My phone is warm too. It's like a handwarmer. Is there an app for that? 🙂

Thanks for your assistance.

LOL - You seem to have found the handwarmer app, you just don't know which it is.

If it's warm then some app is using cellular data; the heat comes from both the transmitter and the battery supplying power to the transmitter. Mail is the most common culprit, although Safari can do this also if you closed it on a page that refreshes automatically. Short of a Restore as New you can try Reset Network Settings. This will erase your WiFi passwords, but is otherwise not harmful.

Well Lawrence we gave it a good go. My phone isn't discharging as fast but it is still discharging. Sitting idle for 1.5 hours it has used 30% of the battery. Yesterday it was 50%. It is also not warm any more.

I think I'm going to let it set for a bit, say a prayer to the iPhone gods and hope it settles back down. If it continues devouring the battery then I'll do a complete reset. 😟

Recently I had a similar problem, the battery was apparently discharging quickly and my initial thought was that the battery required replacing (18 months old).

At the bottom of this page:
http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
it mentions going though an entire charge cycle once per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down). This is something I rarely do, I usually just top-up the battery.

Letting the phone run down until it switches itself off and then fully recharging to 100% using the wall charger worked for me.
My explanation is that the battery meter lost track of the charge in the battery. Allowing the battery to discharge down sufficiently so that the low voltage circuit shuts the phone down, recalibrates the meter.
