E key on keyboard not working. Password with e key .
Crazy and bad luck- on booting up, I am asked for username and password to log on- normal. But my password has an "e", unfortunately the "e" key stopped working I have cleaned. Restarted nothing works '
so now what do I do? I need a document from my laptop urgently . Thanks
Sorry to hear about this. Best way as a short term measure is to beg, borrow or steal (but don't take that literally) a USB keyboard (not expensive these days): got a friend with a PC nearby? Plug that in and use that when you need to startup. I would also suggest changing the password.
Other than that as a short-term and instant measure, you could start up with the install disk if it is handy and use the Utilities to change the password. If you don't have that, changing the password may need some Unix work.
That was my first thought, but you cannot get access to that until you have logged in. I have easy access to this as I use a couple of language keyboards and what you need to have checked is the box for Show Keyboard Viewer. I just logged out to try this and, indeed, there is no way I could see this could be done from the login window: USB.
I think Graham is right, Smaziz. Unless you have access to another keyboard (or, perhaps, your computer is configured for remote screen access, though even then I suspect you may need to enter the password on the original machine - I've never tried it myself) your only other real option is to try to get that "e" key working.
Last question though. If i did get access to someone else's keyboard (USB), would the computer automatically recognize the external keyboard? if not, how do i allow an external keyboard access to my laptop, thank you again.
In general (and I have tried with a number of keyboards over time) either it works out of the box, or you will be asked to identify the keyboard. The instructions are clear: press the key to the right of the left shift key. . . etc. The only problem with the external is usually finding the Command key as opposed to the key marked with the Windows symbol.
As to Rod's suggestions of remote access, if you can do this over a network (not sure if there is no one logged in), you would enter the password on the remote computer -- easier to pull the keyboard for a couple of minutes.
