HP Laserjet M1120n MFP: Printing&Scanning over LAN/WLAN

Hi there,

my new LJ1120n works perfect via USB connection (scan&print). Because up to three Macs would like to print it would be much nicer to have it installed at my Airport Express (if not possible via Ethernet at my iMAC). Its important to print and scan!

When installed via Airport Express or directly connected to my iMac I am able to print but scanning won't work.

In neither setup I am able to do a twain scan into Preview, Image Capture or a ScanTab (not showing in Print&Fax system pref). Connected to USB it's possible to scan with HP Director or with GraphicConverter.

I used apple software update to install the latest HP driver update.

Who is able to help?

Thx in advance
Marco

Yes is is possible to do a direct connect via LAN. You have to double check to make sure your HP Laserjet m1120n is a network model (it should be, not aware of many laserjet's that are not). If your printer/scanner came with a manual or instructions its all explained in there. I posted the link below if you dont have the manual.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&product=344 7599&lang=en&#
Series User Guide chapter 5.

If that does not work:
1. you need to find out the ip address of your HP printer/scanner
2. In System Preferences > Printing > add printer > IP
-select line printer daemon
-enter ip address of your hp printer/scanner
-select your driver and printer model
3. In your System preferences > Sharing > turn on file sharing
Your scanned files should end up in your Users > Public > Drop Box folder

Hope this helps.

ADSL modem is connected to your Airport, Mac is connected to Airport via ethernet, printer/scanner connected to Airport via ethernet.

The network setting should not change. You should have Ethernet with a green circle to the left. For printing, your Mac needs to be plugged (ethernet cable), wifi printing wont work through Airport. Unfortunately Apple got rid of AppleTalk which is a protocol for connecting computers and now uses TCP/IP which makes this whole process more painful.

I've found a page on HP's website that explains everything in more detail:

My Airport Express only contains one single Ethernet port - so my ADSL modem is connected to the Express. The HP is connected to the iMACs Ethernet port.

From the sight of the iMAC: Getting internet from Airport AND printing/scanning via Ethernet.

I suppose my network settings are my issue. Whenever I just set "Ethernet" to "DHCP" the printer will be found via Bonjour but the scanner won't be found!

If I define the IP and subnet mask manually, what IPs do I have to define? My Airport starts with 10.0.1.1 (255.255.255.0).

My apologies in the previous post for some reason i thought the airport express have multiple ethernet ports. By default the Express has an IP range from 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.255, 10.0.0.1.1 as its own default setting. And your Subnet range by default from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.255.255

From what i understand your iMac is getting its internet from the Express wirelessly and your HP is directly pugged into your Mac via ethernet? With your HP connected via Bonjour at least are you able to print?

I assume you tried Image Capture to see if your scanner is showing? Also make sure Scanner Sharing is on in your System Preferences.

As I wrote in my first post in neither setup I am able to do a twain scan into Preview, Image Capture or a ScanTab (not showing in Print&Fax system pref). Connected to USB it's possible to scan with HP Director or with GraphicConverter.

Scanner/Printer Sharing ist the second step to me. First I'm interested to scan via Ethernet which is not willing to work... "HP Director.app" opens "HP Scan.app". After that the app looks for the scanner but won't find it.

Is my issue that I've got two network areas defined in System Preferences > Network? How should it be set?

Thank you - problem solved!

I just have to switch the printer off and on again. It will be discovered via Bonjour then.

My config:

iMac > Airport Express > DSL Modem
HP > iMac (Ethernet port)

Network settings:
1. Airport
2. Ethernet (set to DHCP, yellow light)

When the HP is started, the network will need about 15s to find an IP. Then Bonjour will find the printer after about 20s. Finally printing AND scanning is possible via Ethernet connection!

Thanks again
Marco
