Malfunctioning Universal Dock

I have an Universal Dock with a first generation iPod Touch. The set up that I have is that my iPod sits in my dock which is connected with an apple component/usb cable to a power adapter and bookshelf speakers. Today I go to press play with the Apple Remote and the iPod does not respond. Not only that, but the iPod is not charging, and when I move the USB from the power adapter to the computer, my computer does not recognize the iPod. I have isolated the dock as the problem because when I plug the apple component/usb cable directly into my iPod, everything works fine. On a couple of occasions before, I realized that there was maybe a loose connection in the dock, because one channel would cut out, but then it would cut back in. Has anyone else experienced this problem. Any help is appreciated.
